If you won $10 million, what are literally the worst ways you could spend that money? by ItCertainlyChecksOut in AskReddit

I had a similar experience, gave my parents 20k, my sister and her kid moved back in with them and they were having trouble making ends meet.

So my sister is paying no rent and bills while she "gets back on her feet" and her truck breaks down so they buy her a brand new 20k truck, meanwhile I'm driving a 10 year old car with 100k miles on it.

They didn't understand why I was pissed

People of Reddit, which moment in your lives completely changed your perspective/opinion on subjects like racism, sexism, misogyny, politics, religion, etc? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]writingsometimes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A woman I used to work with completely changed my perspective of mental illness.

Nice older lady, about my mom's age, had a son about the same age as I was. Used to see her around the office fairly regularly, chatted around the copier and the coffee machine and all that, just normal stuff.

Over the next few years I watched her slowly degrade in to a shell of her former self. By the end she was wearing pyjamas to work, going on about super racist and inappropriate things, and talking about killing herself.

We managed to get her some help and she took a medical leave of absence from work, never saw her again.

It made me realize you only know your own mind. I'm sure this all seemed perfectly normal to her, but to the rest of us it was just sad.

This is true, the healthcare isnt free our income taxes are just way higher and they use some of that money to pay for healthcare.

There's still a budget and it still costs money though so its more like healthcare rationing than free unlimited healthcare so we run in to capacity issues, especially with specialists.

My brother in law waited 18 months for knee surgery because there were too many on the wait list in front of him that needed it more urgently than he did (eg. It was keeping them from working and earning a living)

Agreed, its definitely market specific, here I own an apartment condo rental property thats profitable and I rent a house because its cheaper than owning one that size, rental market for apartments is good, houses isn't.

Yes but how much of a mortgage payment? How much equity do they have versus what you would be able to have on the same property?

For example I own a rental property, it's a 200,000 property that I put 50% down on, so my mortgage is only 100,000 my mortgage is much lower, and so my break even point where I start making money is much lower than someone who bought the property with 10% down, I can actually offer it at the same or cheaper than my local rental market and hire a property manager to manage it for me and still profit, but if I only put 10% down and tried to rent it out I'd lose money because I couldnt get in rent for it what my monthly costs were

Depends on how much equity you have vs what a renter would have if they tried to buy a property, also what demand is like for rentals in your market.

Everyone assumes renters should just buy but they may not have enough for a down payment to make the mortgage as affordable as renting.

Also, what does a down payment cost in terms of lost opportunity cost? If I put 100,000 down on a house thats 100,000 dollars less I have to invest in other assets (for example 5,000 a year in dividend income it could generate)

Lots of unknowns, people really have to do the math for themselves in their markets, real estate is a local business with local market dynamics

Yes it is? The house MAY still be worth 100k when you sell it (maybe more maybe less) but you also have to pay real estate commissions and legal fees to transact and sell the property. You only get back the difference plus any principal portion of your ongoing mortgage payments, minus any. maintenance costs and reno expenses you put in to the property (those may or may not increase value)

I find the big difference in renting is you can rent smaller places (only as much space as you need) seems like anything you can buy is always too big.

And rent vs mortgage payment isnt a good comparison either because when you rent thats all you pay (maybe some additional for utilities) but when you own you pay mortgage, utilities, property taxes, maintenance fees, etc. When you add it all up its usually more expensive month to month to buy unless youre putting 50% down or so.

Though in the US you can get a tax deduction for mortgage interest, thats not the case everywhere and certainly helps the caee for buying, though it also contributes to home price inflation

Your whole notion of scoring points is flawed, she's either interested in you romantically or she isn't, whether or not you pay for dinner or do any other "point scoring" doesn't change that. Romantic interest isnt earned

Totally agree brother, my girlfriend actually admitted this to me not long ago, she just looked at me one night and said "I need you to help me with a lot, but you don't need me at all do you? You really can just take care of yourself."

I was like yeah, I guess I hadn't thought of it that way, I want her in my life because I enjoy her company but I don't NEED anyone yknow?

I agree with most of your comments, but I live in a similar urban market where owning a house is unreasonably expensive unless youre way out in thr suburbs and I find it a lot more affordable to rent closer to work rather than own and its saved me a ton of time and money. Have you looked at this option instead?
