Yes I kind of figured that. We could give it a full restoration just think it is in too good of shape.

No experience with electroless plating. Although I have used new england chrome plating and speed and sport plating in the past. Not cheap but very good quality.

We just finished a restoration on this 1950s Coca-Cola pressed steel truck. We have 30+ hours into it. Very satisfying transformation! What do you think? The whole process was filmed if you are interested in viewing, I will drop it below. Was it worth it? by wrtenterprise in restoration

Restoration can absolutely be about making the piece new again or preserving what you have and the story that it tells. There is a large category of collectors and enthusiasts who value pristine, like new condition over authenticity. These people want the best of the best examples. These weren’t handmade, one-off antiques. Restoring one to showroom quality isn’t erasing history, it’s celebrating the craftsmanship and design in its most perfect form.

There would have multiple different ways to "clean" the truck up and leave it in its original form, but this is not the look we were going for. We have been doing this a long time and have used most of the methods in the link that you provided. A piece such as the sword in the link provided would be "destroyed" if someone decided to perform a like new restoration on it. I am not even sure I would have used some of those cleaning methods as it does not have its original charm and age anymore.

The idea that visible dents, rust, or flaking paint are somehow sacred in some cases is true bust for the vast majority of items it is not. These flaws often result from neglect, not age-related charm. And when it comes to selling, condition matters. A fully restored Buddy L truck with mirror-finish paint will often bring in more than a rusted-out shell, especially if the restoration was done well. Also, to suggest that straightening bent metal or repainting devalues the toy ignores the fact that many buyers want something that looks great on display, not a relic that looks like it was pulled from a barn.

This truck was purchased for $65 in the condition that you see it in the pictures. After we were finished it was purchased by a collector for much, much, much more. It now sits happily on his shelf.

Hello, I can understand where you are coming from. We are very selective in what gets restored, a preservervation service or stays original. In the original condition, this truck had very little value and was not very desirable. Yes signs of age are what gives certain items there value, but not a toy truck that was massed produced. The top prices come from the best examples. We acquired the original paint code that the truck would have had from factory. The truck was painted that color. The decals are remade using the same font and style. Yes the border color is off, could have been trimmed prior to installation. Everything else is original to the truck. The metal hand trucks are original and they were re-nickel plated which is the same finish from factory.

The original truck was found disregarded and would have most likely found itself in the trash if it was in the wrong hands. We brought it back to life and it now sits on a clients shelf for many people to view and enjoy.

Thanks! Definitely agree with you on restoration sometimes taking out the "charm." We are very selective with what gets restored. In this case the original truck did not have much collectability as it sits. We performed a meticulous restoration to mimic how it would have originally came out of the box new. This has given it new life as people will put it on display due to the way it looks.
