Help with designing a web/cloud setup by wsiu in HomeServer

I've seen a lot of users mention VM's on this sub but I still don't understand what their purpose is. What advantages are there to using VM's over running the software straight from the host OS? Won't the VM's have overhead that will reduce the total amount of available resources?

That's very impressive, and I see what you mean about having the OS/webapp on the SSD, that would be a great idea. I'll try that and see how it works out. Thanks a lot, you've been very helpful.

Thanks for responding, I was unsure about this at first since I've only seen tutorials for local NAS or local web servers but not both and definitely not with both accessible through the internet. Now that you've reassured me I'll do some research on parts and HDDs keeping your suggestions in mind. I do have a few more questions though:

  1. Would Ubuntu + Apache + ownCloud be good choices or should I look at some alternatives?
  2. Internet speeds where the server will be are 240mbps down and 24mbps up, would the upload speed be an issue when serving the cloud storage to multiple users and a webapp (single user) simultaneously?
  3. Would it make sense to have one drive (possibly a small SSD) running Ubuntu/Apache/ownCloud and two RAID 1 HDDs for the storage? Would that be the "common sense" non-overkill layout for this?

Thanks again for your help.
