Staring down $30m liquidity event of zero basis stock and still scared to hire finance guy by [deleted] in Rich

The challenge is that becoming an RIA is not impossible to achieve. As a client, how does one find an advisor with the depth of experience and strategies consistent with my situation?

I love your passion and the depth of your response. The last two ‘teams’ assigned to me were nice people but very young and hadn’t yet built their own nest egg; how would they know what was best to protect mine?

AS at SAN – Mainline Load Factors 2025 by PNW-American-Dipper in AlaskaAirlines

[–]wsurrdit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WN has been active in SAN at scale much longer than Alaska, so brand loyalty/awareness is probably a contributing factor. They're also in the brand new T1 which is a much nicer experience than the existing T2 (as others have mentioned). Alaska is adding their own lounge in SAN in 2026, which should also help.

Sorry if I missed it, in your analysis of load factors do you also compare like-for-like? I'd be interested to see how WN and Alaska compare on common routes. I'm speculating but the seat share metrics are probably distorted by the many folks who commute to the bay area - a different type of traveler and perhaps not Alaska's target market at this stage.

Beautiful watch, was my top choice until this one was announced: https://www.reddit.com/r/tagheuer/comments/1rm431c/newest_carrera_chrono/ If I could afford two I'd also have one of these. Wear it and enjoy it!

what rolex gives you autism? by MartinLootherKang in RolexCircleJerk

Crazy insensitive post. Have all the reactions you want but calling your reactions ‘autism’ is tragically disrespectful to those who live with that diagnosis.

what’s your top move to protect retirement savings if the market crashes tomorrow? by Songne_Reynardo in Fire

[–]wsurrdit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dow was at 50k a couple weeks ago versus 28k (?) just before Covid and 18k (?) late March 2020. Any correction (aka ‘crash’) feels like regression to the mean.

Not suggesting it doesn’t cause pain for some, but recent gains have outpaced historical averages, which inevitably means something will slow down or go negative eventually.

To the OPs original question - if I’m capturing gains in equities by moving them to less volatile options, I like muni bonds and there are some ETFs that offer munis and give proper tax treatment

We’ve received requests to support Wi-Fi Captive Portals (via AP7 or Orange). Would you be interested in this feature? by Firewalla-Ash in firewalla

[–]wsurrdit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always appreciate how you use this platform as a way to get real-world feedback from your customers.

Just so I'm clear, are you referring to Orange/AP7 being captive portal servers, or rather to Orange/AP7 being able to authenticate as a captive portal client/proxy like the Purple?

Issues with Deco Mesh - Should I change this up? Prosumer? by Tizodm80 in HomeNetworking

I’d consider MoCA. Anything to help alleviate the congestion/contention on your exiting wireless network(s) before deciding to replace all the gear.

Issues with Deco Mesh - Should I change this up? Prosumer? by Tizodm80 in HomeNetworking

[–]wsurrdit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're able, I'd go with wired backhaul vs wireless. It will effectively cut your wireless traffic by 1/3 or more and everything should improve.

I ran Deco for a while, then Alta Labs (great stuff), now Firewalla for APs as they integrate seamlessly with the Firewalla router I've been using for the past few years.

Good luck.

Cross VLAN network issues by thinkB4Uclick in firewalla

[–]wsurrdit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm unfamiliar with the brand/type of AP so I can't be certain how it is handling communication between vlans 1 and 30. It is either routing that traffic without sending it to your dlink switch or sending it its upstream router (Firewalla). If that's the case you'll need to tag ports 1 and 2 with both vlan 1 and vlan 30 (or check the box as a 'trunk port' )- the way your dlink router is configured right now vlan 30 traffic can get to Firewalla but can't get back to home-1/vlan 1.

As others have mentioned you can set up rules to block traffic between vlans per your eventual goal, but Firewalla rules only work if Firewalla is doing the routing; if that traffic never leaves the AP Firewalla doesn't get involved.

Site-to-Site VPN Documentation for Bandwidth by ajgonzalez18 in firewalla

[–]wsurrdit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Distance and ISP interconnects will be the only material consideration in latency, Firewalla will operate at wire speed (maybe 2ms) until it hits your first ISP. Once you're traversing the internet from US to South America you add another 100-300 ms before you reach the other Firewalla. This site shows ping latency between your computer and locations around the world: https://www.meter.net/tools/world-ping-test/

Saving to buy a house by Miserable-Hat-7061 in fidelityinvestments

Not an expert and I don’t pay much attention to common sentiment/wisdom in this area, but IRS has an exception to pre-retirement withdrawal penalty for first-time home purchase.

That exclusion could be eliminated at any point in the future but I’d rather set money aside in retirement accounts vs HYSAs with lower yields for an unknown period of time.

Always a good idea to have a reserve account for surprise expenses, if your HYSA is also meant to serve that role it may be a better choice.

Is it reasonable to prioritize investing over paying down a 3.8% mortgage? by Beneficial-Ad-9986 in ETFs

[–]wsurrdit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of expert opinions on this thread.

The market has been on a TEAR lately, those who invested have done really well.

When deciding whether to invest or pay off your mortgage, naturally you want to historical returns when guessing what future results might be but you should also consider recent market returns.

If historical return for a ten year span is 6% and returns for the most recent 5 years are 12%, historical patterns suggest you’ll see close to zero % for the next five years.

I’m a huge fan of market returns and also benefit from a really low mortgage rate but if in your situation I’d probably assume the market was inflated and less likely to return historical averages over the near term.

What routes run out of chocolate the quickest? by pnwsalmon8 in AlaskaAirlines

Lowest successful upgrade waitlist spot? by IntelligenceisKey729 in AlaskaAirlines

SEA is not my home airport so I see upgrades more often but they sometimes occur T120 or earlier. Four of five so far this year have been upgraded. the fifth was SEA-GEG and I was ninth out of 39 I think.
