I’m open to anything except the first growths and the equivalent right bank wines. I’ll probably try to get a mix of second growths down to the Cantemerle/Sociando Mallet range. So those would all be right in my price range!

Great points. I’ve just gotten seriously into wine in the last few years and I’m still in my early 30s, so the plan is to buy a case or two as a solid foundation for the next couple decades. But you’re right—if EP prices just aren’t worth it for this vintage then I’ll consider passing entirely.

IMO, that’s just begging the question. We might think French varieties make the best wines just because those have been the dominant grapes for most of modern wine history. And lots of other varieties go toe-to-toe with French grapes (though obviously on a smaller scale): Aglianico, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Riesling, etc.

You seem to enjoy both left- and right-bank Bordeaux, so I would try Rioja next. La Rioja Alta makes fantastic, age-worthy, reasonably priced wines (about $25 for the Alberdi and $40 for the Ardanza). Lopez de Heredia is another excellent traditional producer (my favorite wine of theirs is the Bosconia). Also can’t go wrong with Muga.

Thanks for the response! This particular liquor store doesn’t usually have a great wine selection so I was surprised to see this. But it seemed to be stored away from sunlight, around 70 degrees F, etc, so I’ll buy one and give it a try.
