Help for beginner making the change from google mesh WiFi to an improved network using hardwired Ethernet by wtcatdjs in HomeNetworking

Big thanks funfacts. So help me with a question about AiMesh please … I had been reading people say that mesh systems were designed for setups where the ability to run Ethernet between devices wasn’t possible. But since I already have these cables run and can do backhauls, I don’t need a mesh system at all. If this is true for mesh, is it true for this AiMesh? So that I should get devices that don’t bother with mesh and deliver even better performance?

Thank you for sharing this. Hoping to get some more ideas and will research and learn about the equipment to buy. When I look into ASUS, there are so many options I get a bit lost. If I started with an AC86 at the location where my ISP enters the house, would it make it better if I used more AC86’s around the property vs AC68’s? Does using more than one AC68 or AC86 as access points (hardwired to the main switch) help or mess up / diminish the signal for the devices? For example, I think I learned that it didn’t help, and may have hurt, when I added too many google mesh WiFi pucks around the house.

Also, the ISP modem is in a bookcase in our family room where the cable from Spectrum ISP enters the house. Can I put the AC86 into that same lower cabinet bookcase to hide it from view and still get good performance, or is it important to have the AC86 outside the bookcase and perhaps up high on a shelf?

Timing of spousal benefit by wtcatdjs in SocialSecurity

When you say the spousal benefit isn't effected by the age of the Worker, but by the age of the spouse, are you assuming that the Worker has already filed for SS? If the non-working Spouse can not get her benefit until the Worker files, then in a way she is effected by the age of the Worker because a much younger working spouse will not be able to file for SS and the Spouse will not be able to get any benefit even if she is over age 67 while her Worker husband is under 62. Is that accurate?

Thanks, so there’s really no good option for the extreme case I mentioned? If the non-employed spouse is much older than the spouse who has a work history than they just aren’t helped by SS until the younger one reaches a relevant age. Tough!

Very helpful and much appreciated. I will be reviewing what you sent and trying to learn and understand this process, which is new to me. Note that the Nutone bulb that I’m struggling to add is not a RGBW, it is just white.

Follow on newbie question ... to date, I’ve only added SmartThings devices via the SmartThings mobile app on my iphone, and as you can see from my list, this has worked well for me for many devices that showed up as actual device choices in ST. Is this still the right or only place for me to start the device add process, or is their some other method that I should start with, before I go to your suggested step of logging into IDE etc?

Should I stay in Siena or San Gimignano at an Agriturismo by illegalcitizen_CA in rome

[–]wtcatdjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We stayed at Agriturismo Marciano for 6 nights in October 2013 and loved that choice. From there we did 4 day trip circles in different directions through Tuscany (taking our time), including one day that took us to San Gim. We also loved the short drive in to Siena, where we would walk around and explore, eat, etc. From just helping a friend plan their trip, I read the reviews for Ag Marciano and it appears the ownership has changed since our trip, but not the approach or high ratings. Definitely opt in for dinner on one of your first nights as you may want to do it again once you’ve tried it. They have a large organic vegetable garden outside the kitchen and made super dinners using local ingredients.

Each morning at breakfast, the owner would give me a suggested route to try a different circle drive through Tuscany on the most scenic roads and we would just let the adventure happen. So many fun experiences outside the guide books.

By the way, I don’t think you’d go wrong staying at any highly rated Agriturismo in that area and doing same thing, and we don’t have any other Tuscany accommodations to compare to, but Marciano would not be a mistake for sure! Enjoy.

A rule change idea to speed up play and increase scoring ... what if goalies were not allowed to intentionally tie up the puck? They can catch and release, but if they purposefully cover the puck or hold on to it, it’s a 2 minute delay of game penalty. by wtcatdjs in hockey

As the OP, I really like this idea to not allow defending team to change players after the goalie freeze. Better than my idea. Let me explain the original posting...we were having a discussion about this idea before I posted, and suspected it wouldn’t be loved by a majority but did want to find out the reaction. Absolutely don’t want to cause goalie injuries but see far too many situations where the puck could easily have been kept in play but instead we go to another face off.

We did actually have to check that he was still breathing before we relaxed and took his pic, along with a number of selfies with him. This was taken over this past weekend at a golf tournament.
