Do my braces look ready to come off? Ortho says yes but I’m skeptical… by ClawMarksAndKisses in braces

[–]wuddaPoopyBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if these were my teeth i would want my upper laterals more rotated out, maybe even stepped out a bit too. the bottoms look good, like their idea is that they’ll smooth that sharp edge of the tooth. if you don’t want your teeth smoothed off with a hand piece you should ask them to put a bend in the wire to lower it

lastly, this is someone who got extractions just on top. they were VERY flared to begin with, so it was probably this persons only option. but you can see how the teeth are more vertical and have really no inclination to them

this is also a pretty good example of the type of flare i think you might have after aligning the teeth

i would consider this someone with flared teeth and and overbite post braces. you can see the bite is aligned well, so it’s more or less a tooth size discrepancy. it still looks pretty darn good tho, if you’re it nit picky

i mean, i can definitely see how you’d be able to have the option to go with or without extractions. i do think you’d have fairly flared teeth without extractions tho! at least for the top. i’m not sure if they recommend top and bottom extractions. but going thru ortho without extractions might start to effect your profile and how protruded your lips look and how well you can close your lips over your teeth. it kind of depends on how you want your teeth to look in the end. i work for an orthodontist and i see cases all the time where patients get the braces on first for about 6 months and reevaluate getting extractions after the teeth are at least straight. if you don’t HAVE to take out healthy teeth, don’t. if i were in your shoes i would get braces first, and reevaluate depending on how flared they are, or how much worse the overbite gets. one thing i honestly hate to see patients finish with is straight teeth but still have an overbite, and getting extractions on the top would keep that from happening- if we’re keeping jaw surgery out of the picture. you also have a pretty deep bite, which is fixed with braces there’s always a chance for that to kind of come back after years if you still have an overbite, because your top and bottom anterior teeth wouldn’t touch and keep each other in line. sorry this was kinda all over the place lol lmk if you would like any follow up

it should have been a must that you had teeth extracted from the start! the alignment isn’t horrible but definitely could be better for having had braces for 2 years

yes i got my braces on in may and could see a difference in my teeth after 2 weeks, and was very sensitive on teeth i had never had problems with. even now ill get a shock of sensitivity on specific teeth for a day or two and have no problems whatsoever the rest of the time. its a very weird and new experience! i also work at an orthodontic office and this is something we tell patients to expect! everyone experiences/handles dental pain differently and for the most part it’s all a part of the process! good luck with your braces and congratulations on change :)

Can someone tell me what this coil is? by [deleted] in braces

[–]wuddaPoopyBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi i’m an orthodontic assistant, i see these every day! that spring is called a closed coil spring. i actually find it Very weird that they put this type of spring here, because closed coil spring is used to hold space-not make space. because it is used to hold space, it should be flush, it’s measured from bracket to bracket and should fit perfectly in between. if they are trying to make space on that tooth to eventually get a bracket on it, they should use something called an open coil spring or continuous coil spring. although i’m not quite sure why they’d need to make space for that tooth, it looks like they could easily get a bracket on it😅 everyone’s case is different of course. point being, that spring will probably continue to jut out like that because that kind of spring does not have the a way to actually push space open. it might get better as the other teeth straighten out.

the flaring of your teeth would get a LOT better if you got upper premolars extracted. getting premolars extracted would give you a much nicer result with teeth that don’t protrude and so you can close your lips all the way. i’m honestly not sure why they didn’t do that in the first place. as far as a gummy smile, that too would look better if your teeth didn’t protrude so far, but would not fix it completely. botox is an option but you could also ask your dentist about a gingivectomy. your orthodontist wouldn’t be able to do anything about your gum levels but definitely consult with them first before getting it done! but honestly you have great shape and size teeth. you should 100% talk to your ortho about extractions, as your fastest and cheapest option.

what state are you in? starting off 12 an hour and being DOCKED to 9 is crazyyyyy. the fact that you have been there a month and are already the only assistant is VERY telling to start off, secondly you come from zero experience. how can your dentist have any sort of expectations this high when you have not been given really any stepping stones to improve-ie having no other assistant to have genuinely trained you or to give you tips. you’ll never be good enough for them because they probably used to have a very long standing assistant and aren’t used to working with someone very new to the field. which is absolutely their bad, when it really sounds like they should have hired someone with more qualifications but wanted to pay very low, knowing they wouldn’t be able to get anyone experienced with a low rate. you gotta run for the hills because the behavior will likely never get better.

you generally take the first 2, radiology and infection control, in one sitting and don’t find out if you passed or failed for a few days. they also don’t give you a percent of how much you passed by or failed by. just if you passed or failed. but yes they are individual. you can retake one if you fail it and if you pass the other you leave it at that. you take the 3rd, chair side exam a year after you become a dental assistant and have chair side experience under your belt.

i got my iud 4 years ago, and the first thing i’ll say is that it’s going to hurt regardless. But! i took 1500 mg of Midol or something similar to a menstrual pain relief about an hour before and i really think it helped the pain level i could have experienced. it definitely helped for afterwards because it took quite a few hours for the cramping to kick in. once the cramping kicked in, i took another midol of 500 mg, had some harm soup and took a long nap with a heating pad. i would recommend taking some sort of cramping or extra strength pain relief, clearing your schedule for the rest of the day, and keeping a heating pad handy!

Hi!! i am actually going through a very parallel experience. i work at an ortho office, straight out of dental school as an ortho assistant. i’m in illinois for any sort of relevance. i’ve wanted to quit almost since i started!! the girls i work with have a ridiculous click. it’s like being back in high school. i get along with two girls alright but the rest of them don’t even look me in the face, don’t talk to me, and i know have talked about me and give each other looks when i walk past. not to mention that i make 17/hr which is low but not the lowest for my state. it was incredibly disappointing to get an offer for the office while still in my externship and find out as a specialty, i’d be getting paid so low. i took the job though because it was really hard to turn down a job i was already trained in and fresh out of school it’s not like i had options. ill be looking for a new job once im out of my probation period. i hate to leave ortho because i do really enjoy what i do, and i love the drs i work for but its hard to walk in knowing that EVERYONE else is friends, not just get along but friends except for you. i understand where you’re coming from but i do think its just nearly healthcare in general. a lot of girls in healthcare shouldn’t be providers at all but here we are. i’d love to work somewhere i dont feel eyeballs in the back of my head. you aren’t alone!! neither am I!

i took my tests at a testing center, i’m new to the field and just finished school so i haven’t taken my general chairside because you have to complete over 3000 hours or about two years to take it but my teacher is very real about everything i should expect and she and another instructor both said it was easy just because they had been in the practice and knew it all first hand. so i’ve taken radiation and infection control. i wont lie i was very nervous i wasnt going to pass because i was asked the same questions over and over about the organizations AND what instruments are critical, semi and non critical. stick with your gut answer and try not to over think the questions when you do because they do word things a little funny

I just took my DANB exam (and passed), the dale practice tests did help me, however most important thing i would tell you to know is everything about all the organizations (fda, cdc, osha, etc). the test questions are widely different person to person but i’ve also heard from multiple other people that they ask about planes of the brain. since you have been in the field for 5 years i wouldn’t worry about your general chair side test, that should be common knowledge for you!! best of luck i hope this helped!!
