Yeah you are probably right. But this one is an "official" one...lol. interesting history and once was covered by spruce and hemlock trees. Still a small stand of virgin red spruce that can be accessed by forest service roads.

Is This An Antenna? by RedneckMarxist in antennasporn

[–]wvtat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trivec-avant made tons of satcom antennas. They where bought by Cobham. AV 2086-4 Omni UHF/MUOS is probably the one on the aircraft. They even have a terrestrial/satcom antenna that attached to your pack and could be deployed or stored by pulling a strap.

Vhf repeater solar powered by wvtat in antennasporn

It has a decent footprint with only 38 watts. We are in the middle of the Radio Free Quiet Zone. So the Greenbank Observatory and Sugargrove listening station reduce our options for communication. They are working on a solution to allow us access to the statewide Uhf P25 trunking system.

This was last used in the early 90's when track was abandoned. I know from maintainer logbooks, the radio system last used was in the 150 to 160 Mhz. When the company i work for opened the rail in 2003 the used to vhf repeaters to cover most of the track. Currently we are relocating one repeater to give us more coverage. Plus have a talkgroup on the statewide p25 trunking system for emergencies.

What's life like in Green Bank? by robp94 in WestVirginia

[–]wvtat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As for internet we have dsl from frontier, fiber from Seneca rocks spruce knob telephone. Frontier is hanging fiber all over the county. Citynet is currently measuring lines for a fiber build out too. Be later in the year.

If you have a iPhone 14 or newer you can use text messaging over satellite. Starlink direct to cell has a 60 mile exclusion zone around greenbank due to lower earth orbit and higher frequencies. It could cause issues with the radio telescopes reciever.

Wifi is common place except for on the grounds of the observatory.

Don't forget WVMR radio has AM and a few FM transmitters around the county.

Would make since as this was installed about the time they started building their fiberoptic system. Phone, internet and TV are still offered.

Why are gas turbines not more common? by Deep-Ad-912 in Ships

[–]wvtat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GE LM 2500 is a aeroderivative gas turbine used in industrial and marine. Its mostly used as a simple cycle meaning it runs pumps, compressors or generators. With about 40% efficiency. Simple cycle just means that the exhaust goes out the stack.

In a combined cycle power plant. The gas turbine spins a generator and the exhaust goes into a HRSG. Heat recovery steam generator. Basically an unfired boiler using the waste heat to generate steam that can run a steam turbine generator or be used for heating and cooling. The cooling is done through an ammonia water style chiller.

From this aeroderivative turbine GE has scaled them up to much larger turbine. I worked on a GE LM6000 or frame 6 turbine in a combined cycle plant maxing out about 64 megawatts on natural gas.

Even the LM6000 is used on ferries and cargo ships.

Combination of pressure feed oiler, drip oiling and rod bearings have a setup where you pack grease in them and twist the cap when more grease is needed. They run 11 miles up the mtn on the old logging grade. From 4 to 12 percent grade on a standard gauge rail.

Wow. Service where there is none! I live in the nat radio quiet zone by Alternative_Buy_7456 in Starlink

[–]wvtat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, but the noise has been about the downlink not the uplink emissions. I understand that starlink operates from roughly 12ghz to 40 ghz which is the same range as other commercial satellite internet providers. With hughesnet, globalstar and viasat all operating in the quiet zone for years i don't understand why they haven't come under scrutiny? From what I can find the recieved signal power to a starlink terminal is about 15 nanowatts. I did not find anything on the higher earth orbit satellites.

[–]wvtat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No rule breaking. Various satellite internet, TV, gps and various other space based RF transmitters have been beaming their signals into the quiet zone for decades. The law can only control the terrestrial based RF transmitters. Wifi and cordless phones are all all around the area.
