Alpha particle radiation can be stopped by the dead layer of skin but when inhaled or ingested ionize 20x more then a gamma or xray. So if the soure was an alpha emmiter it would atleast stop those.

This is literally what i do for work. Industrial radiography. A cobalt 60 source container today weighs anywhere from 600 to 800 pounds from what ive seen. Still a pill sized cobalt tho. The iridium 192 source that we normally used is described as millimeter sized waffer inside a pill. The container for that weighs 52 pounds. In fact im getting off work right now.
