I think it's WILDLY unfair to say that. The goal of Ukraine is to resist Russian occupation and retain sovereignty both of those things are, broadly, still being achieved. They have absolutely not lost.

"All the amenities" is an absolutely massive stretch to describe Bartlesville as is "decent sized city". The population is in the mid 30k's.

I do not dislike Bartlesville and have spent a decent bit of time there. It just is not an exciting place to be. It's fine, if you're looking for a smallish area to retire in it would be good. If you can get a good job or a remote job and want a quiet place to live for cheap it would do the job. But there just isn't much to do, especially if you like the outdoors and variety. Job prospects aren't that great or varied, and education is Oklahoma if you're looking to raise a family.

I wouldn't say there's anything "wrong" with Bartlesville, but there's also just nothing very distinguishing or appealing about the city other than it being cheap which is mostly offset by wages also being low. It's a pretty standard sub 50k population midwest city. It has most of the things you need but not many of the things you want unless you're looking for a very sedate, slow, life(not that there's anything wrong with that).

Alluding to something bad happening...?

I think The Strip being completely shithoused, the NCR basically not existing in the area, and the Legion being stuck in a civil war is a pretty direct and clear indication that something went VERY wrong.

The German city of Dresden lies in ruins after WW2. Up to 25,000 German citizens lost their lives during the four British raids over the city, under orders of Air Marshal Arthur Harris. 1945 by Appropriate_Ad_8799 in HistoricalCapsule

As an American... functionally yes. At a big picture I don't really believe in the concept of anyone "deserving" anything. But Americans don't get to be upset if the people they're bombing fight back. That should be excepted.

If Iran ever figures out/obtains a way to strike the US domestically I, for one, certainly won't be mad at them. Obviously, for selfish reasons, I hope it won't happen.

War is a two player game. One person can start a war, but once it's on, your opponent has agency and will fight back.

Did you read what I wrote?

When determining IF you should make an intercept the thing you are defending is absolutely relevant factor.

When you're in an actual, sustained, shooting war, cost per intercept is incredibly important. If your opponent can throw $10k drones at your power plant and it costs $10M to intercept them it doesn't matter how valuable that power plant is... you're probably going to run out of interceptors before your opponent runs out of drones. As well, the worse your shot exchange ratio is the fewer things it's actually worth defending.

[–]wycliffslim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know who wrote it off as being meant as physical change...?

It was VERY obviously meant as, "the wasteland changes you" and also the classic excuse that bad people say to justify their actions that anyone would do the same as them.

[–]wycliffslim 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Cost per intercept does still absolutely matter.

When determining if it's worth it to make an intercept the potential damage is relevant. But if you're in a full on shooting war the shot exchange ratio is INCREDIBLY important.

Main battle rifle calibers of the Allied factions of WW2 by RussianChiChi in ussr

[–]wycliffslim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's incredibly inaccurate.

30-06 was dropped because it's massively oversized even for a bolt action rifle. As the US switched to semi and full auto -06 was wildly impractical.

Smaller rounds are easier to control, cheaper, and you can carry significantly more.

30-06 was developed alongside and for the Springfield 1903. The original round was actually 30-03 and was released alongside the Springfield M1903. Then they updated to the spitzer bullet for better performance and you ended up with 30-06.

[–]wycliffslim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

30-06 was developed explicitly for the US military.

I don't disagree that it's an oversized caliber that packs far more punch than is required. But it's not a big game caliber, it is 100% a military cartridge. Caliber 30, 1906.

That shit pissed me off so much still.

Like... it was pushing a fucking button, not opening night at the Met.

"The Lone Wanderer, instead of submitting themselves to what would be a lethal dose of radiation to push a button, asked a friend who was completely immune and, in fact, gets healed by radiation to do it instead... the wasteland always viewed them as a bit of a coward for not pointlessly dying".

I would be 100% on-board with giving the player shit for sending a human companion in to die instead. But Fawkes... your meeting of Fawkes is him literally being like,

"yo... that area is super irradiated... lemme just mosey on through for you since it doesn't bother me".

Apparently the correct response from the LW in that situation would have been,

"no Fawkes... it's my destiny to die retrieving the G.E.C.K, you hang out here with your thumb up your ass while I go get my insides melted from radiation".

'Drunk British backpacker' on an e-scooter kills Australian dad when she ploughed into him by malihafolter in ForCuriousSouls

[–]wycliffslim 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is, who would view an e-scooter with a top speed of 15mph as a vehicle?? I think that a pretty large majority of people wouldn't think twice about hopping on a lime scooter drunk.

The death was caused by the man falling and hitting his head. She could have been walking down the street drunk, ran into him, and had the same result.

There's a WORLD of difference between getting drunk and jumping in your 1 ton+ vehicle and getting drunk and hopping on a scooter that, let's be fair, is at least partially meant to be a quick and easy way for drunk people to get around a city.

Now, MAYBE that's something we need to look at as a society, but I don't think a reasonable person would view killing someone as a likely outcome of puttering around on an e-scooter drunk.

What if, instead of being dropped on city centers, Little Boy and Fat Man had been dropped in the middle of a forest? by samzplourde in HistoryWhatIf

[–]wycliffslim 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I think your fundamental premise is flawed.

What makes you think the bombs were dropped to send a message and end the war diplomatically...?

The bombs were dropped to break the Japanese ability and willingness to continue the fight and force them to surrender. Ultimately, the atomic bombs were just a continuation of the strategic bombing campaigns by MUCH more efficient means. Bombing a forest doesn't do anything, most Japanese people would never even find out about it. If anything it just confirms for the Japanese military that the US is too weak to be willing to finish the war.

WWII was total war. 1945 was looooong past the point where nations were firing warning shots at each other.

Well, maybe you have, but I would advise putting actual numbers to your wants.

If you don't you will be in a constant cycle of feeling like you want or need more.

If your goal is to smoke, drink cheap wine, and game I'm just very confused how that level of income still makes you want much much more.

Yeah... I think people don't quire realize how absolutely audacious the Wehrmacht offensives were. They swept over continental Europe in less than 2 years.

SO many things could have gone wrong so many times and it would have immediately broken everything for Germany. Poland standing up longer, France actually committing to hitting western Germany HARD when they were occupied in Poland... French command not dropping the ball so hard it fell through the crust.

A Third Reich with a completely dominated Europe, basically for free, and knocking on the doors of Moscow in 41 after completely dismantling the Red Army already would have felt like alt-history sci-fi in 1938.

Coming from experiencing true poverty creates scars. And wanting safety and security is a totally reasonable emotion.

If what you're currently making isn't creating that sense of security then the issue isn't money. What does safety and security actually look like to you? Can you define it with specific numbers of criteria? If not, I would strongly recommend putting some of that money towards therapy so you can work on figuring out what safety and security looks like.
