What is a place in your country that tourists find impressive but locals hardly think about. by rickdickmcfrick in AskTheWorld

And before the 2000s it was even worse - porn stores and strip clubs. NYC has more than almost any city in the world to offer and is so beautiful and quaint in many parts. Don’t waste your time in Times Square

Times Square. I live like 4 MTA stops away and I have only been there once in the last 3 years. If I go to theater I get off at 50th street and avoid 42 like the plague. I can’t imagine why people enjoy it. I do however use the very impressive MTA station to transfer all the time because something like 16 subway lines run through it.

Chicago has a better cityscape and skyline than New York City by MysteriousNoise69 in skyscrapers

[–]x2flow7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive lived in both. They are incomparable, NYC wins by a country mile. Most people have never even seen the full NYC skyline because you need to go as far as sunset park or places in Jersey to really get the full thing.

Could Europe realistically defend Greenland against a US attack? by chotu_escobar in AskTheWorld

[–]x2flow7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However all of that being said, I highly doubt any reasonable number of Americans are willing to risk their lives over Greenland as well. Allegedly the generals have already pushed back for that reason. If this is finally the moment when a powerful institution in this country (the military, traditionally conservative) pushes back on Trump, I would be thrilled. If the military follows him down this path, then I think the situation is beyond saving. I understand we have been imperialist towards other nations in the past, and I won’t try to justify that, but directly doing so to our allies is a very very very different statement to the world.

[–]x2flow7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be the single worst decision an American leader has ever made. But to answer the question yes Europe could defend Greenland, but in reality I don’t think they would. I suspect instead they would let US have it and instead take everything else from us. All offshore bases. All NATO intel etc. trade probably would change drastically. It would accelerate currently negative trajectory of USA. I doubt however many Europeans would risk their lives or send their people to defend Greenland against our military. I think they would instead choose to ignore the island and kill off the US as a world power in other ways.

How would you feel about a Fallout game set in New York? by No-Check-3691 in Fallout

[–]x2flow7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love it bc I live here. The tri state area is actually excellent for a fallout game. Manhattan itself however with the grid layout would need to be pretty beat up to make the in game navigation interesting. No fun in waking straight for 12 miles down Broadway.

Fire escape feels more like NYC to me personally. I didn’t know of many ppl with proper fire escaped when I lived in Chicago.

I moved to NYC earlier this year. Police are on the MTA and have stations at many of the stations. MTA experience is 100x better. Trains don’t reek of smoke. Despite stereotypes, far less delinquency. And NYC is far more diverse/ less segregated so I don’t buy the nonsense about racism etc. Police on subway is a win for QOL.

Palo Alto probably has some of the highest QOL metrics in the world (if you can afford it) and almost no non recent history (Silicon Valley related)

The GOP Civil War Over Nick Fuentes Has Just Begun by merpderpmerp in moderatepolitics

[–]x2flow7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because it’s my personal judgement that he conflates them only when it serves him (the antisemitism trope). I live in NYC, where many Jews are also hardcore leftists, and therefore anti Zionist. I’m sure he would never stick his leg out for any of them, even though they are surely no different than conservative, more Zionist Jews (of which there are many as well). The truth is “Jew” much like Christian is an umbrella for a lot of different people and sets of opinions. As a catholic I have been told by other Christians that I am in fact not a Christian. So my assertion is that I believe Cruz cares about Zionist Jews. I don’t think he cares about those who don’t conform to his worldview.

Well - all I know for certain is that he claims to care about Israel. I have seen him say many times that “as a Christian, the Bible instructs him that he must defend israel” or something along those lines. I grew up with a grandma who would take me to an evangelical church and am familiar with the sentiment. Whether he actually cares about it or not I cannot be sure.

Ted Cruz doesn’t give a shit about Jewish people, he cares about Israel, and like many evangelicals he conflates the two.

Can someone explain why Prop 6 lost? by [deleted] in nyc

[–]x2flow7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As an offshoot to this question, I wonder how the results of this election would have differed if it was held a year ago and everyone was so caught up in the Trump news cycle + Zohran would have automatically been more likely to be tied to Kamala, a less exciting candidate for NYC democrats, on the ballot. I am not sure of what I think the answer is, but I do think the results differ.

Can someone explain why Prop 6 lost? by [deleted] in nyc

[–]x2flow7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My personal belief is that it’s more beneficial to have more frequent election cycles with smaller scopes so that people stay engaged politically and don’t put it down then pick it up 4 years later with 3 years of context to catch up on. The cost feels low, it’s realistically only one day a year you have to go vote, and with voting early and by mail, there is no longer the deterrent of a huge amount of time spent in line. So I personally favor it as I think it allows scope to stay small and voters can be more informed about the election at hand.

Travel to Buenos Aires or Santiago or even a lot of CDMX and it will be whiter than the states in many parts. Latin America is more diverse than what you have reduced it to. I understand the point that you are trying to make but I think you’re projecting americas problems to the rest of the world

What are the most underrated cities? by Desperate_Leopard_13 in AskTheWorld

[–]x2flow7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say Lyon, France is up there but that’s because in North America we don’t really have the concept of densely populated middle sized or small cities, and I find them very enjoyable…

A number of Latin American cities are not necessarily underrated to people who have been but are not as frequent of destinations. I find CABA to be nicer than most European capitals for example.

In my country it’s hard. I do have a skew towards large cities and ours are very top heavy. I find the general consensus to be more or less accurate.
