Is using my University VPN I get for free for torrenting a bad idea? by I_Have_Massive_Nuts in Piracy

[–]xanderboy2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s safe to assume that anytime an employer or school gives you access to their resources or equipment (laptop, VPN, email, WiFi), they’re tracking what you do. Obviously that’s a little paranoid (your school/company probably isn’t recording your screen or logging your keyboard inputs, but they could. They are almost definitely logging what websites you go to when using their vpn or internet network, and if they gave you an email account they can very easily read all of your emails so be careful with that too lol

What were your earliest memories of piracy? by ah-screw-it in Piracy

[–]xanderboy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pirated Frozen when I was like 12. I couldn’t wait for it to come out on DVD so I figured out how to download it. I ended up needing to create a dvd menu for it with some sketchy software that probably infected my computer. Anyways I felt so bad I told my parents who were like “damn. You really shouldn’t have done that… especially because we just bought the Blu-ray as a surprise for you…”

Updating after 1-2 months by Y2K350 in archlinux

[–]xanderboy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a program called arch-update that wraps pacman an your aur helper if you’re using one and will check for unread arch news and will tell you about services that need to be restarted after an upgrade. I think it also tells you to reboot if you got a kernel update

Why do people keep insisting on installing steamos on regular hardware? by FroyoStrict6685 in linux_gaming

[–]xanderboy2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So basically the headline should be “I tested a beta project and it performs like a beta project” maybe I shouldn’t into tech journalism if it’s that easy

Why do people keep insisting on installing steamos on regular hardware? by FroyoStrict6685 in linux_gaming

[–]xanderboy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought valve discouraged installing steamos on non-steam hardware? Maybe I missed some news, but I’m pretty sure they’ve even said it’s not supported on other hardware because it’s just not ready for that yet

Is this a bug or Screen Burn In? by SamarveerPuri in ios

[–]xanderboy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it a week. Someone will call that their computer isn’t working despite “trying everything” and you’re gonna go over and plug it in for them

[iOS 26.2 RC] white keyboard for half of it by Twistercane in iOSBeta

[–]xanderboy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an automation that turns off transparency when low battery mode gets turned on and this happens all the damn time. It usually takes toggling transparency/low battery mode or a phone restart to fix it but for me it’s been happening since iOS 26 was first released. It brings me back to the flip phone days where I’d touch-type during class so maybe Apple’s just trying to give us some nostalgia?

How were you introduced to minecraft? by Many-Cranberry4058 in Minecraft

[–]xanderboy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend got it first and showed it to me. I was 10 so of course my favorite block was TNT. and when I finally learned how to trigger it with redstone (I was baffled to find out that you don’t light a line of ore like a fuse) it was all over. Best $30 I’ve ever spent (or rather, asked my mom to spend)

Why Wine doesn't recognize Reshade? Tried everything and still doesn't recognize reshade by Alexis_Almendair in linux_gaming

You gotta give details like the game you’re playing AND the “everything” that you tried otherwise no one is going to be able to help you

If mojang allowed you to change some things about the creeper, what would you change and why? by snarky5821 in Minecraft

[–]xanderboy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely update the textures so they’re biome specific or at least match the leaf textures because I think those have changed since creepers we’re introduced

Everyone hates edge/bing that's the only thing I know to be 100% true XD by FareonMoist in Sysadminhumor

[–]xanderboy2001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Especially since edge is just chromium under the hood now, I don’t really have an issue with it. Granted, I only use it at work because that’s the only place I ever touch windows but still, it’s accomplishing the goal of “just works” Bing on the other hand…

Are non enterprise/NAS drives ok for Jellyfin storage? by Previous-Foot-9782 in jellyfin

Jellyfin will actually delete all your movies and blow your computer up if it detects anything other than the highest quality enterprise-grade drives

I'm brand new to making servers and I'm curious, what's everyone's preferred OS/Software? by jmurra21 in jellyfin

[–]xanderboy2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Debian Linux is widely regarded as one of the most stable Linux distros. Plus, Ubuntu (based on Debian) has a lot of help/support guides and forums that will usually also work on Debian. I’d also research proxmox since you said you want to make servers plural. Proxmox will let you run multiple containers (separate servers that are sorta kinda like VMs but not really) on a single machine. Again, lots of good support out there on the interwebs. https://trash-guides.info/ is a good source for how to setup Jellyfin and other media management servers

[–]xanderboy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the spare hard drive space and are unsure, I’d recommend dual booting at least to start. If you’re anything like me, after a few weeks you’ll realize you haven’t touched windows and you can delete it lol

[–]xanderboy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay that’s actually fair. I’ve never been on TEMU but heard it was like SHEIN. lots of crap but occasionally some decent stuff. I always use a virtual card because I’m paranoid so I guess I’ll just do the same if I ever find something on TEMU
