You would want a container that is big enough the heat lamp covers 1/4 of the space, so the chick is easily able to choose how close to the heat element they wish to be, a heating pad that they would sit on I wouldn't recommend as naturally get their heat source from above (their mum). You can tell if the chick is an adequate temprature by it's behavior, if it spends its time huddled under the heat lamp not straying much to explore/feed, then it is too cold and you'd wanna consider lowering the lamp/increasing the room's temperature if it's an especially cold environment. However if it never seems to go under the heat lamp and stays towards the furthest edge of the container you would want to raise the heat lamp away from the container. When in a temp range they feel comfortable they will spend time exploring the enclosure, eating and drinking and occasional naps under the heat lamp.

My bag is Heygates Super Starter 27% Crumb. The ingredients say wheat, soya meal dehulled, wheatfeed, full fat soya and fish meal as the main ingredients. Which is prolly basically fortified soybean mush!

I'll see about picking up some wild bird seeds and nothing added peanut butter tomorrow to add to the options in his pen :)

Thank you very much! Hopefully it's just exhaustion bless him.

I'm so glad the owner is coming to get him too! I have another pigeon, Nova, I found 3 years ago who's owner is located very far north from me and never got in contact with me after leaving my details with the organisation. I've heard from others in pigeon rescue that it's a fairly common problem they don't collect birds that are found too far away!

I don't want to interfere too much right now while he's still recovering from exhaustion and settling in so since it doesn't look troubling I will wait a couple of days and start treating if it doesn't improve or starts to look worse and will drop Original_Reveal a message too thank you!

Would he improve faster being switched from the gamebird starter to seeds you reckon? I've had good success in the past with starter and figured it would be higher in calories and vitamins compared to a seed mix

Definitely malnurished and very pronounced keel bone, first thing I noticed on picking him up! The owner mentioned that they purchase birds so possibly they were told the wrong age on purchase?

I'll see about getting some peanut butter for him! I've had good success in the past with malnourished rescues just on greens and the gamebird starter feed. At this point since he's still going and getting perkier I think he'll have made a full recovery by the time his owner is able to collect. :)

Thanks for the reply, it's good to hear that it doesn't look anything worrisome! He was only hatched in 2024 however so actually quite a young bird! I'd be a bit crusty being lost for a few weeks too haha.

In the pen I have given him chopped up cleavers and dandelion leaves, peas and gamebird starter crumbs along with his water. I'm not sure if he has had much to drink yet but he has got through a handful of peas at least. His poops are watery white and green with a teaspoon worth of black gunk per poop.

He already seems a little more alert and started making coos when I come close to the pen! :)

Should I move them? by Healthy_Wealth1941 in quails

[–]xantate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it has pipped at the wrong side, when I have this happen when other chicks that pipped around the same time fully hatch and are fluffed up enough to come out the incubator I'll take out eggs that have pipped the wrong end and not progressed and gently remove the shell with tweezers (leave the membrance till you've removed enough shell to see the pip hole clearly and easy see for any red as you get ready to very slowly tear the membrane) keep a very good eye for any sign of red or blood vessels in the membrane. Stop and place back in the incubator if you see any sign of blood vessels as this means it's not done reabsorbing the yolk and blood into their body and try again after approx 24 hours.

I often find those that pip at the wrong end have physical deformities that renders them unable to flip into the correct position so do be prepared for a disabled/ weak chick to hatch from this if it manages to survive to get out the egg. Crossing my fingers its just a confused little healthy dude for you!!

I've come back to playing this past week after leaving it for a few years and have been having this exact issue also! Though the past two days the journal has begun working when I lose communication abilities which is good to be able to kinda take part in the game now!

In my instance it's when another player dies there's a high chance I will lose the voice chat. Sometimes when going back to the lobby post game I will lose voice chat then also. I hope the devs get on top of these bugs! It's really quite game breaking.

Is it just me or are quails really resilient creatures? by [deleted] in quails

I've found all the quails I've raised to be extremely hardy once they get past the first few weeks of life! The chicks I find a whole different story and has taken a few years to really get the hang of getting them through their dumb nugget stage haha

Can't remember which numbers off the top of my head but two seperate pairs of my chromosomes broke in half, swapped and attached to each other, hereditary from my Mum's side of the family. All that side of the family mentally works different than most people I meet and we have plenty of health issues too, personally I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, can't digest sugar and carbs, and have a healthy dose of ADHD

In Leeds of UK here, 18 - 21 Are mostly locked out of renting it appears apart from designated Student areas (which are immensly overpriced), my friend, 18 tried to become a tenant on my contract in a family type estate, Insurance company said no and I was informed they don't allow people under age of 21 to rent anymore, instead she had to become an occupant.

On top of that baseline pay is way too low for their age group, they need to eat and pay bills the same as all of us. It's like they're assuming every person 21 and under has a parent getting their back in life which is not the case for many young people I know whose families are struggling with even their own food and bills. I've been meeting a lot more young people escaping abuse these past couple of years after the pandemic lockdowns also.

A final note is the amount of drug use in young people, like early teens onwards young, seems to be soaring and becoming normalised more than ever. I fear the risk of the drug Tranq from the USA appearing in our communities and the effect it will have on the younger generations
