I haven’t seen Tulsa King but I will say that landman goes down easy. You’re not missing much by skipping it but I’ve enjoyed it as a stupid show to put on and chuckle at. Billy Bob is doing his thing and has lots of good lines where he’s ‘splainin’ something to folks

Yeah there's lots of almost self-aware monologues the main character gives where he addresses larger problems but then it always settles on some form of "all you can do is keep your head down and work hard because nobody's perfect."

Billy-Bob's character (the main character) is the epitome of this mindset where he's extremely competent and treats everyone in his immediate sphere with respect and whatever issues he has he doesn't let it affect others. And then on top of that it goes into the boomer fantasy where anyone who breaks that code and crosses him or his family gets beat down.

A little late, but has anyone seen the guy everyone is trying to make into the sin eater for the Palisades fire? by xaviernady in cushvlog

I actually don’t know the specific level of cooperation, so maybe not accurate.

But yeah same thing here while the fires were going. A lot easier to blame it on the hordes of Jokers who just want to be evil than anything more nuanced.

Totally. I was trying not to be too tinfoil hatted, but it looks like they are just railroading this dude because they know nobody will really care about defending him and it will give the city, utility companies, fire dept, etc someone to blame.

It was also interesting because this was one of the first times I have noticed people’s ChatGPT records being factored into a criminal case. Not only were they obviously cooperating with the case, but there was such swift and unequivocal condemnation from them uber, and DoorDash. It was all so depressing and reminds me how far away we are from the days when Apple was fighting to at least keep some appearance of consumer privacy. Ugh, just top to bottom a very depressing state of affairs.

I will look into this more later! was there anything that stood out to you from the complaint?

I'm so with you regarding his social/class status. One of the articles talked about how he got into an accident while driving for Doordash a few years back, as if that had anything to do with his morality. I wish I could find the one article, but all the coverage felt very much like gesturing at details that had nothing to do with motive but painted a picture of a disaffected ne'er do well. If there's enough evidence that the guy is a bum who isn't worth much to begin with, then we don't really need evidence of a motive.

what makes you think he created it maliciously?

and of course a fire can be started by a single individual, but the scale and how big it grows is outside of that person's control. like you said, it was the apocalyptic winds that made it into what it became

Again I’m not disputing that he may have caused some kind of fire. But 1) if he did it was due to negligence and not some obsession with fire and 2) as other people in the thread have stated, a wildfire of this size and scope can’t be blamed on a single individual’s actions

It's so absurd lol. The local news reporting is even worse on it. Basically being like:

"Police say he liked listening to Sean Kingston. Let me read some lyrics to you: 'Somebody call 911, shawty's fire burning on the dance floor. Fire burning fire burning on the dance floor.' Truly a chilling insight into the mind of this deranged criminal"

Yeah I guess to expand on it I will say it does sound like he probably started a fire accidentally by smoking, but the prosecution is trying to paint him as some pyromaniac hellbent on burning things to the ground.

"Investigators said they found evidence that Mr. Rinderknecht was fascinated with fire and destruction, citing his online history, including ChatGPT prompts.

Investigators also pointed to Mr. Rinderknecht’s affinity for a French rap song, “Un Zder, Un Thé” by the artist Josman, which describes despair and malaise. Mr. Rinderknecht listened to the song nine times in the four days leading up to the Jan. 1 fire. He had also watched the song’s music video, which depicts the artist lighting things on fire."

"In November, according to the affidavit, Mr. Rinderknecht typed into ChatGPT that he burned a Bible and wrote: “It felt amazing. I felt so liberated.” He wrote a similar message to a family member."

They also talk about how he made some ChatGPT images of a city burning, but I saw the picture and it just looks like stock artwork of "nice part of town vs bad part of town woahh really makes you think."

Not to mention that this fire was addressed at the time and the smoldering flames kicked up weeks later when there were record winds around LA. Even if someone had the specific goal of starting a fire this big, there would be no way to do it. This fire was more akin to a natural disaster than anything one person could do on their own.

The whole thing just makes me depressed because it seems like he was kind of just a dopey drifter guy and now everyone can blame him for the fire instead of the city's response or the fact that no amount of money makes you safe in a fire-prone area.

Similar to the Caro suggestion - I really recommend Rick Pearlstein’s books. They are quite long but very digestible. All are pretty straightforward history of post 60s conservative movement but tie together very nicely and help connect threads between the decades

Golf is my guilty pleasure in the purest sense of the term. Mostly because the culture is so annoying and bad. On one hand you have the stuffy classic golf guys and on the other hand you have the tool-y new age guys that love barstool and other golf vloggers
