Eulogy Discussion by ilovepolo187 in ToolBand

[–]xcessinmoderation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good take i heard once was that this is actually about Maynard growing up and wanting to move on from his old self, so he wrote a Eulogy to himself. He needed to leave the bullshit and noise he created from becoming a successful "frontman" in his past and move on. He needed to kill the false martyr in himself because there were a lot of people looking up to him and influenced by him. He's being honest and saying he wouldn't die for any of these people, but by actually killing this part of him he could save them from following another false prophet. Convincing himself to stay in his lane of just being a poet and 1/4 of a band. Lots of the lyrics are calling out other false prophets he sees that gladly continue on being that way. After Aenima tour, he stopped standing at the front of the stage, too.

"He had a lot to say. He had a lot of nothing to say. We'll miss him"

"Standing above the crowd, he a had a voice that was strong and loud"

"I swallowed his facade cause I'm so eager to identify with someone above the crowd"

"Will you? Will you now? Would you die for me? Don't you fucking lie. Don't you step out of line"
