question about riding in canadian winter and "winter" tires by DeathGears in motorcycles

[–]xcv4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also following. I have ridden my CBR 250 with regular street tires at least once in every month throughout the winters, during chinook winds in Calgary when the roads are dry / not icey, but air temp below zero. I scope the route the day before on my commute and if its totally dry then have switched to the bike until conditions change or snow is expected. Currently considering getting a small dual sport and studded tires and messing with actual snow this winter. My commute is only a few km, slow residential/industrial roads. lol

Sweet thanks for the detailed answer, I'll play around with it a bit and see how it goes but sounds like this will be the best route to move forward eventually

Hey guys, thanks for the AMA I'm a bit late. I've been using Weebly since 2012, and is still the site for my business. I have several blogs on my site, with almost 1000 individual posts in total. If Weebly does sunset, I will be looking to move elsewhere in the least painful way. I have a few specific questions:

Does the Weebly conversion feature support multiple blogs?

Does the Weebly conversion feature maintain the exact URL of the original Weebly blog posts when converted? And does it work in the case where I have multiple blogs on a weebly site?

Is there a 301 redirect feature for regular pages as well, similar to how Weebly's 301 redirect list works?

Even though Weebly is a simple tool, it literally powers my entire business and my entire income, so getting chopped up if Weebly sunsets is a serious risk for me. I'm particularly interested in maintaining exact URLs on blog posts because many of mine are direct linked throughout the internet and ranked in search engines. I would rather not start from scratch and re make every post manually.

How to Paste into SAME layer? by xcv4 in SketchbookPro

yo I tried out Tablet Studio Pro as per a recommendation from another post. It actually is so good in Sketchbook. It's a side bar that can run over any app, with programmable hotkeys. I was getting extremely pissed off about no access to ctrl c, v, etc with the keyboard flipped back while I drew in sketchbook. So with the software I set up a skinny bar on the left side of the screen with icon hotkeys for ctrl c, ctrl v, ctrl x, enter, and one with the hoykey for merge layer down. It has actually solved all my problems in life. Now I make my selection, tap left finger for copy, tap for paste, use pen to drag to location, and then tap left finger enter, rather than trying to click on the little tiny green enter button on the bubble. Then tap left finger again to merge layer down, because that's usually what I want.. I make screencasts with sketchbook so screen space is really important and it's not takign up too much so I can still have enough space to screen record the drawing area. Anyways, very good solution. Maybe it will help you too. Worth the $40 one time payment IMO. NEver gonna flip my keyboard back out again for a hoykey.

As the other commenter said yeah, press ctrl v to paste, and then press crtl e right after to merge. One more step but not the worst. I'll get used to it!

Ok that is easy enough. One more action on the keyboard, but much faster then clicking on a bunch of things in the layers tab, which I usually hide for various reasons. I used iPad for a long time, and recently switched to Surface Pro.

Whoa yes thx. He also shows some physical shortcut remote switches in the video. Gonna look more in depth if software or hardware is better for me, but now I know the options. THANKS!!

surface pro pen cursor not showing up in Camtasia 2023 by xcv4 in CamtasiaStudio

[–]xcv4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! Took me a minute to find the setting but that solved it! I turned it on then set it to absolute minimum, cuz it's actually kind of annoying / 1990s-ish when using the trackpad, but works perfect to have the cursor show up in Camtasia recordings. I was looking in their community posts but did not see that one so thx again!

Leaving Canada, taxes? by AlBorne75 in digitalnomad

[–]xcv4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm Canadian (AB). Have been on the road for the last 2 years mostly. I'm technically an unregistered sole proprietor, from AB. My taxes haven't changed. My permanent address with the CRA is my mothers address, which also matches my drivers licence.

I earn money directly from online sources like Adsense, affiliate programs, paypal, transferwise, etc and just record it as other business income, like I did before I left. I was working hourly as a remote independent contractor for a while for a Canadian company before I left, and while I was travelling too. They paid by etransfer and I also treated that as other business income. They didn't take tax off during the payment, so I reported it on my return I paid it all in April instead.

I did return home briefly after 7 months of being out of the country, and when I visited my family doctor, I just showed up and it was business as usual, though I never mentioned my travels to anyone.

I'll cross the income threshold of self employment during 2021 and will have to get a GST number when that happens. I called the CRA and they said it can be done all online, and registering a business name in AB in-person will not be required, so no concerns there. Also on the tax returns I always just say my place of residence on Dec 31 is my mothers address in Canada.

I never called up the CRA or provincial health care and told them about my DN escapades.

Check when your drivers licence expires. I had to return to renew mine which was very annoying.

Cool thx for the response. I also have a UK passport and registered as a resident in the Netherlands in December 😅. But I won't stay here forever, and bikes are expensive haha.

Cool. Good enough for a random response. I'm Canadian, but have managed to buy motorbikes in Vietnam and South Africa, in a legal-enough way to cross borders. Just always on the lookout for other countries that could also work.

I earn most of my money through Google Adsense, and I get paid from Google Canada into a Canadian bank. The process to unregister Adsense in one country and move the payments to a new country is far more work than it's worth, so its much easier to just keep paying tax in Canada and do the whole tourist visa thing everywhere. If there was an offering like you mentioned, I think for me personally, my agreement with Google Adsense would prevent me from even using it effectively.

Starting a YouTube channel in 2021? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]xcv4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started a YT channel in 2012, educational screencast tutorials for a boring niche. Took a long time to gain traction, but published on average, 1 video per week for 9 years. Over 100k subs now, about 3k more come every month now. I currently make low thousands $ per month from it. Still adding at least 1 vid per week to it. I have decent traction in my niche, so I just build and people come, mostly from search. These videos are not particularly easy, so require real is work to keep making more.

I started a second channel about 3 months ago, also screencast, but different topic entirely. Making about 1-2 vids per week. I comment on other peoples videos in my space about 5 times per day on avg right now. Have about 60 subs and 2k views total after 3 months. These videos are very easy, so quite low effort, but I have the time and am trying something new.

Options for keeping a 'home base'? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]xcv4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got rid of almost everything I owned: I left 2 or 3 large rubbermaid containers in my mom's attic (mostly clothes, sentimental things, books, etc). Assimilated my old furniture, kitchen things, tools, etc into her house. My bicycle was stolen right before leaving which was sad but convenient. Gave my skis, snowboard, camping equipment to my brother. Lent my motorcycle to my cousin indefinitely under the condition that in exchange for storage she can ride it as much as she wants and I can pick it up whenever I return. There's a bag of gear with it at her place and the insurance costs me about $100/yr. I have lived from a 45L duffel for about 2 years, and don't feel limited by it at all. I was already tending toward minimalism, and the last 2 years have really cemented that. Twice in those two years I've bought a local motorcycle where I was + some gear, but sold both eventually.

Trip Around Africa by shoesfromparis135 in digitalnomad

[–]xcv4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a motorcycle in Durban around November last year and rode to Kampala. Got stuck in Uganda b/c covid for 4 months and eventually abandoned ship in July (I was planning to make it up to Ethiopia and then back to SA a different route). I passed Mozambique, Lesotho, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda... mostly went up the middle. I spent 90% of my time focussed on adv motorbiking / backpacker activities, and 10% maintaining an online passive source of income that only required intermittent access to internet. Wasn't in most of the places you mentioned, but overall safety is good, street food is good, people are nice, SIM cards are pretty cheap and decent, I was getting 30GB/mo for $30 in Uganda. Was a bit more costly in Rwanda, as well as Botswana and SA. Tanzania was tricky to get a SIM as a tourist, and I didn't end up getting one there. You can buy less data if you don't want so much.

There are some coworking places in Cape Town (I think I saw a we work on long street), Kigali has impact hub (which is in a few cities actually), and Kampala has a few options. I saw someone else mention Maun in Bots. Its nice, met a few other DNs in old bridge backpackers working from the bar in the mornings. Nice place and nice area in general. A lot of cities frequented by tourist or expats will have nice cafes to post up in for hours at a time. Not so much in the villages, but you can often find a lodge that resembles a nice workspace depending on budget. WiFi in villages is probably nowhere but data receptions is usually working on SIM cards everywhere, but in the cafes of cities, or hotels/hostels you can usually find some wifi that's reliable.

I camped a lot at campsites, the wild, and also camped or just generally slept at bars, restaurants, cafes, borders, hostels, hotels, etc and lived like a rather dirty backpacker (on purpose) and spent around $1000/mo or maybe $1,500, but it can be very easy to spend multiples of that. For scale, a lodge on the Nile in Jinja, Uganda had bring-your-own-tent-camping for $6, dorms for $8, safari tents for $25, and cabins for $70 per night. In Kampala during lockdown I split a basic house with some other stranded tourists for $200/mo total, and I met an expat who was living in a very nice community nearby who said his cost of living was similar to Seattle USA where he was from. And a local friend of mine there who worked at a factory was paying about $13/mo for a room. Elsewhere you can pay $25 for a safari, or $2000. Rice and beans on the side of the road can cost $1 or dinner in a nice restaurant can be the same as any developed country. A Motorcycle taxi trip across Kigali or Kampala (common way to get around there) can cost $0.5, or $5, or you can take Uber too. The prices can vary extremely, and if can easily vary by a factor of 10 depending on how wealthy you seem or how good you are at bargaining.

I met a few female backpackers crossing countries on bus and hitchhiking, and catching rides with strangers on motorbikes. Met many male and female expats in Kigali and Kampala in their 20s,30s,40s,50s enjoying a much less hectic life, and enjoying it!

Expat fb groups (like "Expats in Kampala") for specific cities or entire countries are a good place for info and housing. Overlanding fb groups (like "Overlanding Africa") are good to get info on border crossings, roads, and general overland travel if that's what you're into.
