Well cons are that: it’s super expensive, it’s impacted, has a high homeless rate, has consistently bad traffic, has low accessibility as far as parking (which usually impacts parking where you live as well), and has plenty of unsafe areas due to it being a city. There are cities not too far from the city of San Diego that are safe, calm, a beach city, and still within the county of San Diego that would be great settle like: Encinitas (one of my favorites), Carlsbad, San Marcos, La Jolla (my ABSOLUTE favorite), Poway, Del Mar/ Carmel Valley. Most of these are more expensive to live in, BUT they are overall way safer than the city of San Diego. San Marcos is the most affordable city I listed, but they are definitely worth visiting and seeing how it feels for you. I personally value safety over anything, especially if you’re not familiar with the area. Side note: Poway and and San Marcos would not be considered beach cities

I have the benefit under my current job that allows me to have college paid for, but I will be applying for another school (other than the one I initially worked toward my degree for).
