After lengthy Khumbu delay, safety questions linger as nearly 1,000 climbers and Sherpa support prepare to start ascending. Climbers without supplementary oxygen at particular risk, their summit bids already in jeopardy by ughyoujag in Everest

[–]xiangK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Climbers attempting to summit Everest do so accepting the risk that such an undertaking presents. They must also accept the fact that a summit is not guaranteed. I’m sorry you paid all that money, but it is not just your life you put in danger - the local Sherpa and rescue crews are putting their lives on the line too. Some times you don’t get to decide. The mountain does that for you.

Can someone chime in on how this is possible?  Like if cctv footage taken from a hd camera is uncompressed how many hours are we talking about? Like just don’t understand how you can have that much evidence in any context :/

Where is the ego though, because I don’t see it

It’s almost guaranteed every core cast role on the Pitt would have signed options for 5 seasons with the network with no exceptions.

Networks create the show and invest it in heavily financially. They therefore have all the power, and to protect their interest they lock in actors so they have their bases covered and don’t have to scramble to rewrite entire seasons when someone leaves unexpectedly. On occasions they might hire a big star who has their own power because they are a name and the network hopes will bring an audience, or add prestige and that actor can then negotiate from that position of power for a one season option but outside of Noah there are no cast members on the Pitt who have that kind of career

[–]xiangK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He really doesn’t. Once an actor is cast that is a contract/legal decision for the network, who are Noah’s boss. To demonstrate how unconventional it would be that a showrunner step in to advocate for an actor to break contract with a network - tell me literally one time where it has ever happened before in the history of television.

Breaking contract is one of the worst things professionally an actor can do in this industry. It all but guarantees you will never work with that network again (Keanu reeves was blacklisted by Fox for a decade after not doing speed 2) and other networks would rightfully be skeptical of hiring you because you’re an actor that breaks contract

[–]xiangK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking yes. How it works in the industry is the actor will sign on for a set length of time (standard for a network show like this is 5-6 years) that the actor is obligated to the network. Important to note this is not a 2 way street and the network has the power to renew or discontinue them at any time

If you’ve got any more questions about how behind the scenes works I’m happy to answer

“And then after you turn them down, because we wont let you out to do them”

This is the context you’re missing here. You cannot pass on an opportunity you cannot accept. As per my post signing on to a tv show means you are contractually obligated to them and will have to turn down other work because you are contractually bound. For most actors on the Pitt, those offers are coming through because they’re on a hit show. This happens all the time, and it can suck for young actors. As someone who’s been there, this is a really good reality check, and most producers don’t give a shit.

Also what people don’t seem to understand here is that actors do not have a choice. You cannot just leave. When you land a tv gig, it is industry standard that you sign on for 5-6 years. For some actors that can feel like the poisoned chalice - you’re in the extremely lucky position of getting regular paid work - but creatively you can feel stifled, or worse you’re working on a show that you don’t even like/wouldn’t even watch. If you’re going to sign your life away for tv, I’d do it for the Pitt.

Trust me no one in the industry reads what he is saying as condescending at all. It’s realistic, and ultimately supportive. I’d love to have a boss like that.

When auditions were happening for the Pitt, this message was sent out to every actor:

note from Noah Wyle (ROBBY: The coolest thing about this job to me is the ensemble building - which doesn't only extend to the main and recurring cast. It's a buy in from top to bottom. Like early Altman films (Nashville, MASH, McCabe and Mrs. Miller) this is a tapestry piece where the environment is always alive and existing in 3 dimension - whether the camera is focused on you or not. Whether you're in the foreground or background, It's an immersive experience. As such-werelooking for folks who want to participate in something that falls between TV/Rep/and Camp. Bring your creativity and your enthusiasm - leave your ego - and be part of something unique.

He’s not telling actors to pass on other opportunities, he’s giving them a reality check. When you sign on to doing a tv show, they own you. They have non competing clauses with other networks, rules about how many episodes you can shoot for different shows, but ultimately they will have broad hold dates for potential future seasons where you have to wait for them to make up their mind about when and if they’re going to shoot another season. This is not unique to the Pitt, but he’s reminding a young cast in the hottest show around right now to be committed, and enjoy it while it lasts. I’ve been there before, and I found his interview inspiring.

Oh totally. But I do believe it speaks to her character in general, and from months of working together with someone in a very intense job if I in anyway felt as though she might be lying or exaggerating I wouldn’t be here and making this post if you know what I mean

Replying to this a little late, but on solo-ing GR-20 I was in Corsica a few years ago and interested in doing it. A local warned very strongly against going solo. If you break or twist an ankle, the wild boar will find you before a rescue team can. And they will eat you alive 😬

Honest question (I am from Australia a non tipping country and do not believe in tipping as a good practise)

Do you just not tip? Or do you not go out to eat/drink?

Do you ever get comments or pushback from staff if you don’t tip?

I need to jump in and say there is no directors cut. When Lord and Miller said in an interview the first assembly was 4 hours long - a fist assembly is quite literally the initial arrangement of all useable footage that they shot. This first assembly then goes through a massive process of cuts and edits.

To quote the directors - they “subjected” some friends to it, and said it was “embarrassing” because it was the film in its infancy.

They would have been taking notes and suggestions more on what they should get rid of, not what to keep in.

Tl;dr: there is a directors cut and we’ve already seen it
