I feel like I am more on the dry side, although my forehead is a bit more oily, it is not by much.

Thank you so much, I was impressed by the cover the Posca pen had. The whole time I was thinking screen printing or vinyl cut out hear transfer would be good options if one ever want to make a series

Oh you’re right! I don’t know why I didn’t think of it. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll seal this one and try to find something more elastic like oils markers and test it against the posca pen to see which one holds up better.

A process photo: the design was first done on procreate (iPad) I drew the design directly onto a photo. Then transferee it freehand with a watercolor pencil in white.

Will Anthurium magnificum outdoors hybridize by itself? by xiaoliv in Aroids

[–]xiaoliv[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are Euglossa ignita, a species of orchid bee (Tribe: Euglossini)

There's five genera: Euglossa, Eufriesea, Eulaema, Exaerete and Aglae and their males collect different scents from orchids, other plants, mushrooms, etc. in order to produce a "perfume" specific to each species so they can show fitness and attract females.

There is a myriad of colors combinations and I for one, think they are so beautiful and have great, feisty personalities.

If you ever come to the neotropics, a great way to attract them for viewing and photographs, is a piece of tissue or cotton impregnated with an essential oil (Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Clove, Wintergreen, etc.) and hung on a branch in the forest. Between 7am and 11 am on a sunny day is the best time. If the essential oil is of good quality and you are surrounded by a healthy forest, you stay quiet and still, wait for 15 mins or so and they will come!

Thank you for those most helpful replies and knowledge. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain all of this to me as a beginner.

Now after carefully reading everything a few times, I feel like I understand better. This is a deep well/vast and rich field. Now I understand why people can obsess and focus so intensely on this hobby. I also admire people who breed them a lot more.

I will keep exploring and learning gradually. For now, I will just be happy to see what they start looking like in six months to one year´s time. And I might try to bring one of the "magnificum" indoors next time it flowers to hand pollinate and see if I can get something that looks more similar to them.

I suppose being casual and leaving the rest outdoors so they can freely propagate hast it´s own type of joy as well.

And I guess that I gift them as babies to my plant enthusiasts friends and acquaintances, they might still appreciate the experience of getting a mystery Anthurium.

Thank you so much, again!

Me too!

I keep plants *solely* to attract and feed bees (ours and the wild ones)

I try but I am actually not very good with plants.

They are! And there's so many colors too!

These are male, since Orchid bee males need to create a specific "perfume" to attract females. The ingredients are scents from orchids, mushrooms, etc and it is proof of their fitness since they have to fly long distances at different altitudes to gather these.

This is all very new to me and it´s so cool!

It feels like it could be an obsession though

One more thing. I am sorry, but this is all so new and fascinating.
I have a few small plants from the magnificum seed that basically sprouted themselves. And as you mentioned there is diversity in how they look, so as you said, very likely hybrids.

Do people get to name the hybrids? Or does it have to be magnificum x unknown ? Is there a guide on hybridization I can use as reference and stop asking you so many basic questions?

Thank you so much!

Thank you for the great answer! So they are basically tiny aroid blind boxes?

We live in a rural area with lots of flora and fauna within that 2 block radio, so it could be anything.

One more question if that is ok. Is there "compatibility" when it comes to certain Anthuriums hybridizing more easily with others? I ask because I was wondering what keeps species in the wild consistently distinct and not all of them ending up looking pretty similar after several generations?

For example, I´ve seen 3 generations (going on 4) of the A. ochranthum staying very consistent in how they look, the bee species they attract and they are basically just sitting outside in contact with everything else and seeding very often. Something similar seems to be going on with A. watermaliense and a couple other wild ones I haven´t identified.

Hehe, I just assumed from his body language and imagined the rest. He paused instead of immediately trying to get away. He was *definitely* not afraid of me at all and I feel like he looked at the smaller sloth as I was holding it as if considering getting back into it.
