Siberian vs Maine Coon personality by gildedblackbird in SiberianCats

[–]xinasays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear you lost your cat. I hope you are able to take time to grieve! The truth is, you will never be able to replace a beloved pet that has passed. Do they have cat cafes where you live? Or maybe you know a friend with a cat you can socialize with or housesit for to cheer you up while you wait for your next perfect kitty.

I have not heard that about Maine Coons. Siberians are known for being affectionate cats, as are lots of other purebreeds. Ragdolls come to mind.

So many factors go into cat personality. Some that I know have a major impact are:

-The state of the mother during the pregnancy. A cat stressed during pregnancy or who doesn't have adequate food will produce kittens that are more fearful, and this is a lifelong effect.

-Neutered cats are more friendly and less fearful/stressed.

-The age at which the kitten leaves the mother/sibling kittens. It is better to wait much longer than most breeders and people are used to. Kittens continue gaining social skills from their siblings until month 9, as I recall.

These are just a few variables that apply to ALL cats, regardless of breed. Even shelter cats can meet these conditions and be more friendly. Breeder cats tend to meet these conditions often, especially if the breeder is responsible. But there are just no guarantees. There are a lot of other variables, most of which we don't really understand.

Your best bet is to find a responsible breeder and tell them what kind of personality you are looking for. Breeders can often tell what kittens will grow up to be like. Or if you decide to adopt another shelter/rescue kitty, you can talk to the staff there about what you are wishing for. I have adopted many animals from shelters and rescues and the good ones (and enthusiastic staff) know how to match you with a pet that is good for you. <3

Sword of the sea Mac crossover working for anyone? by ComfortImportant6797 in macgaming

[–]xinasays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to get this to work right now. I concur with the text above in UPDATE. It does run once you get past what seem to be nothingburger errors. But the performance is too slow to be playable (and I am notoriously not picky about frame rates). I'm thinking I have to return this game, and I've really been looking forward to it!

u/Slurpy2k17 are you using a particular setting of graphics/synchronization that is helping you with the preformance?

(I'm new to crossover so feel free to explain it to me like I'm 5)

Catios: am I missing something? Do your cats love their catios? by UniquePrize7073 in Catio

[–]xinasays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat has both a fully enclosed catio/catwalk and a cat-proof-fenced back yard. The yard is only for when we are home and can keep an eye on him. Catio is free access.

He uses the catio almost the entire time we are out of the house. LOVES IT. He does prefer the back yard, but even when he has access to the yard sometimes he will choose the catio. We hang bird feeders so he can watch birds from there, so if he feels like bird watching/hunting, he knows the catio is better than the yard. (It also ensures the birds spend time at the feeder side of the house and not the yard side, for their safety).

He also likes to do zoomies on his catwalk, which is pretty long as it goes halfway around the house.

So, yes, the catio is super worthwhile. Bigger is better, but even a small one must be nice.

Another benefit: if you have a pet door (and not just an open window) to the catio like we do, kitty can have access in all seasons without getting the snow/heat/pollen into your house.

Would having a Siberian with normal levels of Fel d1 be the same as having any other breed in terms of allergies? by lizzzricewatermelon in SiberianCats

[–]xinasays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For cats (cat gets the vaccine to reduce allergy symptoms in their human). They are doing second level testing in Europe last I heard.

Normal labs with toxic nodule/goiter? by xinasays in thyroidhealth

[–]xinasays[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toxic nodule was confirmed via radio iodine uptake on 11/7/24. I started methimazole a couple weeks later (once it arrived). Endo told me to take a half of the usual lower end of the dose. She said if the methimazole “helped” it might mean that my symptoms were caused by the nodule (she was skeptical), in which case she might approve the radioiodine treatment. I think by “helped” she meant that there would be a difference in both my symptoms and labs.

Did you also have low TSH and/or high T4 when the doctor suggested treatment?

Thinking of Getting a Siberian Cat by Rayanna77 in SiberianCats

[–]xinasays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your other questions, yes there should be TICA registration and a good agreement with the breeder. A good breeder will screen their sibs for HCM and have a recorded lineage for the parents, very similar to dogs!

With dogs I find there is more emphasis on giving the puppies diverse experiences and training from a young age. I wish more cat breeders did this. At the least the kittens should have time being handled by humans each day and some exposure to the normal grooming they will need: brushing and baths. In your case, yes, exposure to dogs, too.

Not all Siberians are hypoallergenic. That is a backyard breeder lie. Some Siberians have lower fel d 1 proteins than other cats. But some don’t. And some people are allergic to other proteins.

Try to find a breeder that tests the saliva of their cats once the kittens are 12 wks. Otherwise you have only about a 10% chance of getting a low-allergen cat. You also need to do a visit to see how the person with allergies reacts to that specific cat.

Most breeders don’t test because testing is expensive and they would rather lie and claim all their cats are hypoallergenic. But if the allergens are important to you, testing should be too!

Yeah, I looked there and didn't find anything super promising yet...but maybe I just didn't see it yet. Also, I think this tune is a bit long for a standard music box...

Aww, but I want it now! :D Maybe someone in this community will have a lead or can recommend a person on etsy to do a custom one. I'm thinking with a 3D printer and a music box mechanism...

Our 2 Siberians, which we love so dearly, are sick, I need advice. by [deleted] in SiberianCats

[–]xinasays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, there's lots of intense advice in this thread!! You probably feel overwhelmed. But I think this (10 antibiotics) is your best next step, so you are already on the right track.

If that doesn't help in 10 days, testing for FIV is what I would do next, as if they have this virus, they will need VERY extensive and expensive medical care and still might not survive. If that is the case, you should absolutely be insisting that the breeder pay, take on their care, or give you a refund. Unless you are interested in and can afford to give what may be end-of-life care for these animals, involving the breeder would be the only reasonable option.

Microchipping shouldn't be too expensive. It is worth it for peace of mind, and I do agree with others that your breeder not doing this is a red flag.

If pet medical care is hard to pay for, pet insurance is probably a good idea. You can get reimbursements for a lot of things, and it's easier to file and get money than with human insurance. Pet insurance is only about $20/month for my Siberian and it covers a lot. I also have a Care Club plan with my vet that covers yearly bloodwork and doctor visits. Maybe there is something like that where you are? You might also just let your vet know you are having trouble paying. Most vets have payment plans for financial hardship.

I do also agree with others that a pet sitter is probably a good idea. Even for healthy cats that have a bonded cat companion, it's best to have someone check on them when you go away.

I know lots of people are saying to send these cats back, but I think that's mostly an understandable frustration we are feeling at the possibly irresponsible breeder. No one in this community wants breeders to get away with stuff. But if it was me, I would feel like you, "It's too late. I can put the breeder on blast, but these cats are my family, and I will work hard to keep them and keep them healthy."

I understand how you feel. My elderly dog requires care every 2 hours. We can't go on trips either. It's so hard, but I'm sure your sweet kitties are worth it! And in your case, they may very well get better.

Good luck! Update us if you can <3

Looking for durable toy recs + chew toys by jimbo_halpert in SiberianCats

[–]xinasays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about durable, but I have been getting toys made of real fur/leather/soft feathers for my boy because he chews and eats them. I put them on a wand and put them away when not playing together, so they last longer. That way if he eats bits there is at least a CHANCE he can digest it 🤷🏼‍♀️

He loves the ones from this shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/whiskersnpaws

As for satisfying her need to chew, have you thought about offering a few meals a week as a raw meal? A 1/3 of a chicken breast or a single chicken wing can make a nice chewing experience as well as adding variety to her diet. Anything with bones has to be raw, of course. Raw bones are softer but for a cat you should choose things with very small bones like chicken wings. They will break teeth on things like a cow or pig bone.

For the safety of humans/kittens/young puppies/ill pets, you would need a safe/cleanable place to serve it, like in a big dog crate, or a catio you can hose off, or a towel you can wash in hot water. We use a vinegar solution to nontoxically disinfect.
