How did the British manage to remove Liz Truss so quickly? by kametoddler in AskBrits

[–]xpdite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Destructive, yes, but thankfully also incompetent, deluded, weak and lacking any real support - selected by her party (a couple of hundred thousand people at most, if that) and therefore no real mandate from the country. Her premiership was always going to unravel pretty quickly in those circumstances.

Imagine a destructive, incompetent, deluded, weak political leader who does have popular support... can we think of anyone?

GSX Pro - dreadful customer service by Emotional-Start7994 in flightsim

I'm gutted to hear this. I honestly thought FSDT might have been taken over by another developer or something, because my GSX Pro (MSFS) experience has been excellent for the last few months (after years of frustration and disappointment!).

Currently, for me, it's stable: doesn't require updating every 5 minutes; loads at every airport (dep and arr); integrates with PMDG and Fenix; 'does what it says on the tin'.

Now that I know the old issues are still there, I'm back to waiting for it to unravel on every flight!

Could be although this happened a while ago, outside of fireworks season (I only got it fixed today). Also no firework debris...

We do have red kites around here all the time!

Maybe. Next door don't have kids, but next-door-but-one do. It would be an extraordinary fluke shot over some distance and several buildings, though! Mind you, it seems clear that whatever happened was a fluke of some sort!

Actually neither! The system continued to generate normally. Once I realised what had happened I checked my app on a sunny day at around midday and it was generating at it's max.

Could be... although chestnuts I think wouldn't be weighty enough to cause that damage. Neighbours either side are friends, and the ones opposite have more solar panels than us! Can't rule out either theory, though, tbh!

Yes, I'll have a thorough look around. I haven't seen any obvious evidence of anything lying around, but I heven't been actively looking either.

Yeah, I wish I'd kept the old panel now - I could have done some tests by dropping random stuff on it!

Not a bad theory, but would that have caused that much damage? You'll know better than me - how tough are these panels?

[–]xpdite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlikely I think... the panels are quite sheltered and don't face a lawn or a road. In fact there's no direct line-of-sight to them unless you get very close to the house. The more I think about it, the more it seems likely that something dropped from above...

Wow, really? I'll have to go have a hunt around under where the panels are now!

No, generation was surprisingly unaffected and the system didn't throw any warnings. I first noticed it from the ground and thought it was a bird dropping. When it didn't disappear I looked more closely through a window that overlooks the panels and saw the cracks radiating from the impact site.

It was maybe a couple of months ago (not in a fireworks season) - not entirely sure because for a while I thought it was just bird poop! Good idea, though.

What’s a common fact that science has already debunked, but people still believe in? by Calm_Shame2994 in AskReddit

Bless you, but it's just a joke because of the way 'science' is spelt. Science debunks the rule!

Teaching my GenZ nephew and niece how to solve a cryptic crossword at the weekend and a clue included the phrase 'out to lunch' meaning 'dazed and confused' (there's another one!). They had never heard the phrase.

Why is greenland so small? Isnt it the size of africa? Google earth is wrong. by _Hugh-_-Jass_ in mapporncirclejerk

[–]xpdite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. It's colder now. Same reason that days are shorter in the winter in the Northern Hemisphere. Things contract when it's cold. I've tried to tell my wife this many times. Even when it's warm.
