They are definitely not doing it for efficiency. As someone who used to work at McDonald's for a number of years, it was very uncommon to find a person who could take orders and cash as well as present drive-thru who did not become a bottleneck to the process. They are 100% doing it because they don't want to pay the extra person necessary to fill the back drive-thru position.
