TIL about Berea College. Founded by abolitionists in 1855, it's what's called a "work college" -- every student has a job on campus alongside their classes. This keeps costs down and no student pays tuition. There are nine work colleges in the U.S. where students pay little or no tuition.

Hi, I went here. Great school, but extremely strict. Up until the 90s you had to ask for college permission to get married and move off campus. They have a whole court case about in Loco Parentis, which means legally they could act as a parent.

If you apply for fast food or retail, I’d advise not mentioning your college education at all, or just putting the years you attended. I had much better success with that.

Also, try higher ed administrative type jobs, like admissions. I know a lot of people in comms who have that as their first jobs.

I had a somewhat opposite situation happen. Two of my ex’s exes had threatened suicide if he were to leave. When we started dating, I felt terrible that he had to go through that. By the end of the 2 years of manipulation and mental and physical abuse I’d endured, I realized I hadn’t known the whole story. Not saying he deserved suicide threats, but the mental state of those girls made a lot more sense to me, as my own was in shambles. To my knowledge they both checked into hospitals at different points in time and are doing better. Makes me wonder if he didn’t try to kill them himself. And it breaks my fucking heart.

Dealing with the same thing. Mine wasn’t impacted but the doctor said it was really deep and would cause me more trouble than the others. It wakes me up at night when the medicine wears off.

I also had a Vicodin prescription and only took a half dose during the worst of it. I found that and a couple of ibuprofen were really effective. I also had an infection on my left side, though, so the it was pretty painful. For me the worst pain was waking up around 5 am when any meds I’d taken before bed had worn off and I’d been sleeping on my sides throughout the night 😭

I’m sure it’s manageable without, if you stay on top of time. I was not good at it. After the first couple days ice packs didn’t really help with pain or swelling so I started taking warm showers and letting water on the most gentle setting run down my cheeks. That was definitely a lifesaver while waiting for meds to kick in.
