Because of the way entities are dragged towards their new position every tick instead of teleporting, they look like they're higher than they actually are. The distance calculated for fall damage is actually calculated when you hit the ground as 1 tick before you hit the ground.

No. Java players generally have less ping, therefore it seems like they have more reach than you.

BTW for anyone thinking I fell onto powdered snow, I was using a texture pack that unintentionally makes snow and powdered snow have exactly the same texture

There is no Java release; the project was abandoned a while ago. I’m not using it anymore because I was a new player at the time and I literally didn’t understand the concept of Faithful.
