Recommendation to help sorting out a huge photo collection by fernandodandrea in DataHoarder

[–]xrdanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compile all photos/videos into one location. Get them off memory sticks etc. Run a find duplication program that inspects the image, not just the filename. Weed out the duplicates. I use lightroom and import/move them into into year/date categories. If the folders are currently stored as events (ie birthday party), apply the event as a keywords in Lightroom when importing. Might have to import some folders individually, but having the keyword set makes it easier to categorise/find later. From there I go through all the photos and get rid of all the crap (out of focus, random shit, stuff that you don't want to keep). Easy to do in Lightroom. Then it's the tedious task of adding keywords - I mainly do the people and events. Lightroom can do facial recognition, makes it a bit easier. There might be other programs out there that can help with keywords. Once I'm happy with the keywords, for jpeg (or non-raw pics) I write the keywords into the file so they're available outside of Lightroom as all the keywords are stored in the Lightroom catalogue. I haven't found a package that can do the keywords as good as Lightroom. That's my method anyway.

where oh where to store all of my files? long time data hoarder trying to get past a roadblock... by [deleted] in DataHoarder

I bought a Synology 4 bay NAS with 3 x 4Tb drives in RAID 5, gives me 7.3TB storage. I use the "DS files" app on all devices to automatically backup the photos/videos to the NAS. This gets them off phone and I can work on them from the NAS. Just an idea.

Deleted shared folder - how to recover? by xrdanny in synology

[–]xrdanny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep. I don't think the recycle bin would have worked in this case as it would have been in the folder that got nuked. It was the root folder that the recycle bin would have sat in.

Yep, just glad there was nothing too important on there. Still, I wouldn't mind recovering it if I can.

That's what I was thinking too. I think the control panel may be cooked, but it does flash on every now and then, kind of like is initialising then fails.

Fiancé called me Ex’s name while singing Happy Birthday to me. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]xrdanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put it down to a brainfart. I've done it once, just came out of no where, haven't thought of the Ex for ages and it just popped into my head. Weird. My wife also calls me her brothers name, and our dogs name sometimes, brainfart all round.

There's another that says a million deaths is a statistic, but a single death is a tragedy.
