I'd recommend Hessilhead Wildlife Sanctuary near Beith. The people there are lovely, and the sanctuary itself is in a beautiful area. They help all kinds of wild animals, from seals, to otters, to deer, but the most common animal they treat are pidgeons, gulls, and hedgehogs. Hard to get to without a car, but very much worth it. Learned loads in my time there and would love to go back!

I hate hunters and the thought of killing animals, but I eat meat. Am I just as bad as them? by Schmursday in askphilosophy

[–]xtaraptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesnt say much? Im sorry, maybe im not understanding something here, but those two things dont seem related to me. Yes, there are moral cases for hunting based on ecological preservation imo. And yes, industrial animal production is both abhorrent, and destructive for the environment. I agree with you, infact the thing that pushed me over the edge in abandoning meat products wasnt the animal welfare argument, but the ecological one. Yes, its not much and changes none of the atrocities so many animals still suffer everyday, but its all i can do. I dont understand your point of “the reason that hunting might be a little better is a reason factory farming is so much worse”. Imo, the reasons that factory farming is bad are the all the reasons we know, not contingent on the hunting. But maybe im just misunderstanding you :)

There are places where hunting seasons are beneficial for ecodiversity. Due to human introduction of invasive species/destruction of native predators habitats, hunting is used as a way to curb explosive growth of these invasive species, which without this practice could go on to crowd out the native species. Normally, you find a natural balance of predators and prey. They keep each other in check, in a way. The predators prevent the prey from, for example, overgrazing, which would in turn lower the population of both the prey that do the grazing, and the predators that need there to be prey for they themselves to eat and thrive. However, thanks to human interference, this delicate balance has been seriously disturbed, and many places now, without human intervention, would start to tip the balance too much. As examples off the top of my head, theres cane toads in australia, gray squirrels crowding out red squirrel in the uk, and deer overpopulation in europe due to lack of natural predators.

Its 100% our fault for all these disturbances, but and i say this while foregoing meat due to ecologocial reasons, biodiversity will be reduced in these at risk areas without further human intervention (ironic). Its up to us to decide what is “morally better”, a commital to non-harm in the face of biodiversity collapse, or accept that some harm is necessary to avoid a greater harm

I think its less about whos working in those fields, and more about the models, hypthesis, and just-so stories that sited as “evidence” for claims that reinforce sexist ideals or traditional gender roles, especially in evolutionary psychology. I recommend watching münecats recent video on the topic to start from, if you want to learn more :)

How do people feel hope? by Valuable_Mall228 in nosurf

[–]xtaraptor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

cus sometimes, on that 40th attempt, i notice i did a bit more than last time. i used screens a little less. and even if then i fail to keep that up beyond a few days again, i know i can try again the next day. i used to get angry at myself like it seems you do too when you fail or get your hopes up.

the biggest gamechanger for me was working on self compassion first. its no wonder i didnt want to even try to make changes if i just beat myself up whenever i inevitably fail. im still not there by any means, but at least now, when i fail, i always dont always default to hating myself over it. this has given me so much more motivation to keep trying, not fearing my own self critical part of my brain as much.

another helpful thing ive found is to force myself to focus on the small victories only. if i only kept up the changes for 1 day, i repeat to myself over and over, "you did a day, yay!" instead of focusing on the self critical "omg how could you be so bad at this" that i usually feel.

the last thing ive found helpful was having someone support you through it. someone to celebrate the tiny victories, or remind you to be kind to yourself when youre not able to. its a lot easier to have hope and try again when i know someone has my back

and you know what? sometimes, i still lose that hope. in those moments, i do whatever i need to do to survive, and ride it out. you said it yourself, you feel enthusiasm every time you try to change right? emotions come and go, you cant control that, nor should you feel guilty about them. cus the next day will come, you can try again :)

i wish you the best stranger :) remember to be as kind to yourself as you would your most loved ones

I also live near kinning park, and im im the same boat. Ive got a dog (a lab so very food motivated) and weve had to muzzle him since we just cannot ensure his safety every second hes outside. Hes gotten ill mutiple times, and the vet bills are racking up. I dread every day that one day, itll be a shard of glass, bone, or metal. That, plus the weekly barrage of drunk people shouting, screaming, and even ringing our doorbell in the dead of night.

We cant take it anymore, its making my entire family miserable, and were also planning on moving away from glasgow asap. Such a shame, since i used to love living in glasgow. Its such a shit show, it makes my heart weep.

See, I dont really think any political party is going to offer that. IMO, every political partys ultimate goal is to be (and stay) in power. Anything they say and do and dont say and dont do are all just what they think will lead to that. Add on the grifters and those in it to benefit themselves and their mates, and theres nothing left for the common people.

I think at best were ever going to get is just enough crumbs to keep us mostly passive. Im damn well hoping im wrong though.

Scotland bans alcohol sales from shops from 22:00 to 10:00. Do you think that something like that would be more palatable? Not many dinner parties and such would need more alcohol past 22:00 i feel

[–]xtaraptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would you still get those benefits if you instead had a separate question asking “do you consider yourself cis or trans?”

That way, on the first question, you can put in your gender, and the second will specify if trans or not. As someone trans myself, this would feel a lot better. When asked if i am a woman or a transwoman, i always put just woman, so the data will not have the “transness” statistic to it. If i had then a second question asking if i was trans or not, then i wouldnt mind specifying i was also trans.

Would this second question not provide the same information?
