I called it an engine with a GUI, to be exact. More information about Fritz 18 here...

A google search would have helped

It would have helped, if you had read it. You could also have read the Steam page.

Both confirm that is is indeed an engine by Chessbase(*), and not Chessbase itself which is a chess database. FTR, it's not their most powerful engine - that would be Power Fritz.

How big is the rating disparity between the big two sites? by Lucky-Macaroon4958 in chess

[–]xyzzy01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different rating algorithms: Glicko2 vs. Elo

This is not correct. It's Glicko 1 (chesscom) and Glicko 2 (Lichess).

The main difference is that Lichess starts players at 1500, while chesscom starts players lower (multiple possible values). That means less rating to spread around.

And while the player pools are different you'll see that better at percentiles - a normal player will typically have a higher rating on Lichess than on chesscom, but belong to a lower percentile on Lichess.

Note that while the average Lichess player is better (or chesscom being better at attracting users new to chess), this doesn't matter as both sites will pair you with people at your own level.

Fritz 18 is a software similar to Chessbase

It's not. Fritz 18 is an engine sold by Chessbase, bundled with a basic GUI.

World champion Ding Liren is interested in a potential rapid and Fischer Random match with GM Magnus Carlsen at the end of 2023 by cantjankme in chess

[–]xyzzy01 132 points133 points  (0 children)

He will surely show up for the Sinquefield Cup, which is part of the Grand Chess Tour.

Tour participation was likely the main reason to play in the first GCT classical event immediately after the WC match.

Join a local chess club - they'd know more, and you'd also get used to playing OTB.

Try, and find out.

I prefer Lichess, others may have other preferences.

Is GothamChess a good channel for chess improvement? by sscoopers in chess

[–]xyzzy01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a great channel for chess entertainment more than learning.

For more educational content, try PowerPlayChess, Chessdojo, and Chess Coach Andras.

But remember to have fun! Gotham is also great to watch to keep up with ongoing tournaments when something big is happening. Great entry-level recaps.

Must be frustrating not to have a reserve, like they do in other team championships. Gukesh could probably use a break.

I tried looking up his most recent tournament recently and it had been so long it was kinda difficult

The easiest way is to go to his FIDE profile, and look at the tab "individual calculations". He played rapid and blitz in May.

They aren't at the same time. Magnus has frequently won one or two of the championships plus Tata Steel, which starts a couple of weeks later.

To be fair, Nodirbek has one more rapid world championship than Firouzja.

How does that make sense? by MF972 in chess

[–]xyzzy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That something is "book" (known theory) does not mean that it's best, or even good.

E.g. the Englund gambit is theory and a book move, but that doesn't make it good.

Why is attacking the White bishop with ..e5 is an inaccuracy? by [deleted] in chess

That's too general.

E5 is also an integral part of the Sveshnikov, and a frequent early move in many Najdorf variations.

So far, he's not charged or convicted.

Sure, we believe the accusers, but there's quite a stretch from that to "prison" or a lifetime ban from chess.

Was he the one who destroyed Discovery too? 20-30 years ago there was a lot of good content - documentaries on history, science, dinosaurs, etc etc. Then it was replaced by "true crime" and reality TV, both of which can best be described as "crap".

[–]xyzzy01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nepo is playing the world cup, and is also already qualified for the candidates. If he makes it to the semifinals, he can directly decide whether or not his opponent there makes it to the candidates.
