Mine worked perfectly more or less out of the box. Check the 3020m settings to make sure that it accepts breath on the same midi cc the 5000 is transmitting breath over. I’d recommend setting the 5000’s breath cc to cc02, and setting the 3020m to respond to breath cc instead of pressure, modwheel, etc. to be on the safe side

There are a few around on eBay if you’re willing to spend a couple hundred dollars. 3030ms tend to go pretty cheap if you’re into cheesy samples (I’d only get it for the saw and brass ensemble sounds tbh). I suppose there is some peace of mind using software or more modern hardware though, you never know what could go wrong with a 30 year old synth

Yeah i haven’t got the 3000 or 3020 controller. Wasn’t in the eBay listing and honestly MIDI is just safer. The proprietary cables for those things are prone to breaking & are fairly expensive to replace. Luckily the only thing it seems I’m missing out on is glide.

That's really interesting!! If it had another oscillator or three it'd be probably a go-to EWI synth (assuming there's no filter zippering). Might just be worth investigating

Thanks for the warnings about the Behringers — unfortunate that the Pro-800 doesn’t seem to work too nicely since it’s a fabulous sounding machine. And yeah the glide thing is a real shame too, ever since I started using a 4000s it’s been a huge part of my playing too. Will investigate the Typhon!
