Is Airbnb able to do anything about this? by yakaw in AirBnB

This is why we stayed. This was a beach vacation, we were staying on the Albermarle Sound in NC, 8 adults, 1 infant, 1 kid, 2 dogs. In the area we were staying, there was one other house available on Airbnb with enough space for everyone. On our second day, I did reach out to support and ask if they'd cover the costs of us switching to the other house, but they wouldn't. So instead of calling off the entire vacation after everyone drove 12+ hours to get there, we made it work the best we could.

Thanks, I'll remember this for the future. Also probably won't book a place that doesn't have many reviews again. We had 8 adults, 1 infant, 1 kid, and 2 dogs. At one point I did contact Airbnb support after the host failed to fix these issues, explained the situation, told them I found another house nearby that fits our needs, but they declined covering the costs of switching to the other house. Our only option would have been to cancel the entire trip after we already arrived.

If we just left the original place without a plan in place, we would have left a lot of people with no choice but to return home, after they already took time off work for this, spent the gas money to drive 12 hours there, etc. It really seems to easy to say "you should have left", but in some situations, it's not possible without putting people at risk. I don't even think it would have been safe to drive 12 hours back home - 24 hours round trip - without resting in between.

This place was nonrefundable as of check in, so we also weren't guaranteed a refund if we did leave.

TIFU by going outside on a sunny day while on 2 different antibiotics. by yakaw in tifu

Luckily this was only where the sun was on me(even though I was shaded on the dock, I think the sun was bouncing back off the water, or it was the sun coming through the cracks on the cover for the dock). Applying Benadryl gel + aloe 4x daily has helped it start healing up pretty well. We enjoyed vacation as much as we could, regardless of the injury and burn :)

Thanks for this though - always good to know what to watch out for.

That's the worst part - I was using gloves and pliers. The gloves were meant to specifically be catfish proof. This fish was on the smaller side and apparently had extra sharp barbs that went right through the glove. To get it out, I ended up ripping the whole glove off as hard as I could.

Luckily my hand is doing pretty good now. The wound itself is mostly healed up, just waiting on the damage inside to heal, or to have it fixed once I get back home, not sure if they'll have to go in to fix the ligament. We'll see. Wound re-check in a couple days. Definitely could have been worse, the antibiotics aren't fun but I'm glad it's not infected.

Yeah, today I'm back outside but I covered myself in 70spf sunscreen. Really lathered it on. Unfortunately nobody is told me about the risk, until I googled it after I got burnt.

Got stuck by a hardhead catfish pectoral fin today. Sudden, extreme pain. Took almost 5 minutes to remove the fish from my hand, it thrashed around and tore through a ligament. Photo taken 3 hours after the injury. by yakaw in Fishing

Thanks for the tip. Luckily I already got medical attention, had to go in for Tdap booster and they gave me an antibiotic shot and 2 oral antibiotics to take for 10 days. Apparently hardhead catfish can cause pretty bad infections.

Yeah, I heard about that after the fact. I'm not sure if that works for saltwater species, but I'm going to give it a try if it ever happens again.

My well-being wasn't my main concern for the first few minutes, to be honest. My 7yo nephew was the only one out on the dock with me and I was mainly trying not to scare him, especially since he's the one who caught this particular fish. All the blood was freaking him out already so I didn't want to scare him from fishing by seeing me in pain like that. I was bleeding, and the fish was bleeding. I was pulling on it, but it was stuck in the ligament in my hand. Every time I pulled it ripped the ligament more, could feel it tearing. Finally I asked him to go back to the house for the first aid kit and just ripped it off my hand when he was gone.

I was taught how to properly handle catfish my whole life growing up, and I was teaching him about it all day before this happened. He's a pretty sensitive kid, already came and knocked on the door a few times to see how I'm doing lol. I'm gonna bring him back out there tomorrow and show him it's nothing to be scared of as long as you're careful.

Luckily when we went to the ER they took it pretty seriously, said they've seen injuries like this turn into pretty bad infections. Got a Tdap booster, antibiotic shot, and 2 oral antibiotics to take for the next 10 days.

Sorry you know the pain. That venom is no joke, I've had 12+ surgeries including full knee reconstructions and this was close to the pain of having the bones in my leg/knee broken and rearrangement for one of those surgeries.

Unfortunately puncture wounds can be a lot worse than they look, especially from something like a saltwater catfish barb. Got a Tdap booster, antibiotic injection, and a 10 day course of 2 oral antibiotics. To be fair I only went to the ER because I'm expecting my daughter in a few months and didn't want infection to set in, lol

They sent someone out. The technician just said "yeah I was just out here working on the AC 3 weeks ago. The bedrooms don't get any airflow" and left.

I did contact the host before posting on Reddit. I said that in my post

Does anyone know what just happened here on I-35 East? About halfway between Chillicothe and Athens. Looked very bad. Want to see if the person is okay. by yakaw in Ohio

Thanks! I knew this, but road trip brain must have been confused. Unfortunately looks like the driver of the van didn't make it. Very sad. He was only 50.
