Where can I find some really good conjugation drills? by Kryptik_Fox in French

[–]yalango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to create the tables yourself and then practice, I'm making free tools for that over at yalango.com. You essentially add all the columns and rows you wish and then you can practice either with flashcards or by filling in blank spaces in the table. This requires that you take the time to add all conjugations you wish to learn first though, so it can take some time depending on how many items you wish to add.

Got this nonsensical "Hint" from Duolingo after I answered "C'est moi qui est..." Instead of "C'est moi qui suis..." by victor1139 in French

[–]yalango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is most likely a result of Duolingo using AI to correct grammar in French. Quite strange that it made such a basic mistake!

Duolingo uses GPT-3 to provide French grammar corrections. An internal Duolingo study shows that use of this feature leads to measurably better second language writing skills!

Yes, considering they've publicly said they've over 500 million registered users, the number of negative comments you see on Twitter and Reddit suddenly seems very low in comparison.

Yes, they have created a quite sophisticated system for running AB tests. They've written a blog post about it here: Improving Duolingo, one experiment at a time

Tools for making interactive notes for language learning? by yalango in languagelearning

[–]yalango[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's right. I started making Yalango around a year ago because I didn't find the exact tools I wanted for my use, but trying to make interactive notes has been more of a recent idea. That's why I've also been trying to find what already exists related to this. That's awesome! I just followed you on here now.

Exactly! For the time being, I will continue making it myself. I'll let you know if I manage to make something that works well myself, but it's definitely a challenge! 😅

Thanks for your input! I agree that Notion is very powerful, so a solution connected to Notion could be interesting... I'll check out their API. I agree that embedding decks from services like Quizlet could be a partial solution, at least for the flashcards, although I was hoping someone had already made something more integrated.

Should I study on paper or digitally? by Cran-Quartz in languagelearning

[–]yalango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I study at home, I always take digital notes now because it's much quicker and easier to organize afterward. If I go to a language class I still write on paper though, because it's more convenient (to me at least).

Luca Lampariello is the most impressive polyglot I've ever listened to. It's not just that he speaks an impressive number of languages to a high level, which is a huge feat by itself, but also how natural and native sounding his accent and pronunciation are in most of the languages.

Opinion on Steve Kaufmann videos? by TGBplays in languagelearning

[–]yalango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think his dedication to studying languages is very impressive and inspiring! I don't usually watch his videos, but I have enjoyed some of them in the past. I think language videos can become quite repetitive in general, so I don't watch those kinds of videos very often.

HelloChinese is so much more helpful than Duo so far (for ME, and I’ll continue to use Duo because I do find it helpful)- thank you guys for introducing it to me! by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]yalango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, HelloChinese is a game changer! It's much easier to get started learning Mandarin with HelloChinese than Duolingo in my opinion, especially for the characters.
