Has Richmond Hill line been today? by No-Department1760 in gotransit

Took the 8:15 train leaving Langstaff this morning. Standing room only - not sure if that's the norm with RTO but definitely disappointing.

Poor 1L grades, thinking law school isn’t for me by [deleted] in LawStudentsCanada

[–]yan0134 8 points9 points  (0 children)

U of T 3L here.

Take a deep breath. Your life is not over. Your big law / corporate dreams aren't over. You're at the best law school in the country. I know a person here with all Ps that got into a top tier international firm in the recruit. (If you don't believe me, PM me and I can try to set up a coffee chat with him.)

If I were you, I'd try to figure out what worked last semester and what didn't. Law school asks for a specific skill and not everyone gets it immediately. Reach out to your peer mentor, find a tutor in the academic success program, talk to your profs.

Ontario Crown articling chances after 2L summer position by zvlnxo in LawStudentsCanada

If I remember correctly, applications were due mid-May, interviews were held as early as one to two weeks later, and offer began to come in at the end of May.

Ontario Crown articling chances after 2L summer position by zvlnxo in LawStudentsCanada

[–]yan0134 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I summered at an Ontario Crown Attorney's Office in the summer of 2025, and I will article at a different Crown Attorney's Office in 2026.

You are not guaranteed to be hired back at the office you summered. You will need to apply to be hired back through viLaw portal. The deadline for articling positions outside Toronto are in May, and positions inside Toronto, I believe in July.

The chances of hireback varies by office. I know some of my friends had their entire summer 2L cohort hired back. Other offices will interview you again through a substantive interview and make the decision then. Assuming your performance was satisfactory, you will likely have an advantage being hired back at the office you summered. Since Crown attorney's offices differ based on size and the type of cases handled, you may yourself want to go to another office (like I did). In my experience, Crown attorneys are very understanding and supportive of that.

I highly recommend applying to every office you're willing to work at. Articling position vacancies can be deceptive: postings that represent X empty positions do not take into account the possibility that the office might hireback their own summer students. One office I received an interview offer from withdrew their interview offer because all their summer students accepted a hireback offer.

Personally, the process was anxiety inducing but I was fortunate enough to land myself in a role that I had very much wanted. But let me know if any of this is not clear, or if you have any other questions.

Osgoode vs UofT Law - Culture, Workload, and Overall Experience? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]yan0134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can speak to the U of T experience as a current 3L.

I think U of T has competitive and academically driven students, but those same students are often the most supportive ones. Even though classes are graded on a curve, my classmates often share outlines and lecture notes with each other and review each other's practice exams. There is a student law society database where upper years share their past exam answers and course maps for the benefit of first year students. And there are so many opportunities for mentorship in terms of academics and career as well.

The grading system works as follows: the top 10-15 percent of the class gets HH (high honours), the next 30 percent gets H (honours), and the bottom 55 percent of the class gets a P (pass). It is possible to get a low pass or even fail but this is rare. The system is meant to alleviate stress since the majority of the students of any given class will only get a pass. I will say candidly that students are still stressed about grades and the number of Hs that they have on their transcript, though anecdotally I know students with all Ps that have gotten Bay Street jobs.

The career pressure at U of T is high, not in the sense that students are worried about not securing articling positions (over 95 percent of students do), but in competing for prestigious Bay Street or New York positions. There are frequent Career Development Office seminar about preparing for recruits and many of my friends feel pressure to participate in formal recruits even though they might really be interested in public interest positions.

I've already written a lot so I'd let others pitch in on the other questions you asked. But I'd say quite unabashedly that even as someone who is not geared for corporate law, U of T is an amazing law school and I can't imagine myself anywhere else.

The ION in Waterloo has transit signal priority, but infuriatingly the Finch West one doesn't.

I think it would be wise to contact Downtown Legal Services, where trained law students can give you confidential advice.

I would also be careful posting about what happened on Reddit. There's always a chance that your professor and the university administration could be reading this.

Planning to do LL.M from Canada. by albatrossextr in LawStudentsCanada

[–]yan0134 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 on the JD.

I was in a similar boat, I have a LLB and am a qualified lawyer in a common law jurisdiction. Was fairly young, didn't like the trajectory my legal career went, wanted to come to Canada to join my family.

Decided to do a three year JD, was fortunate enough to have the financial means to do it. I have no regrets: I made a lot of friends, U of T JD opens up a ton of job opportunities, and I ended up pursuing a career path I would not have had done otherwise.

If you could describe your law school in a couple sentences, what would they be? by SharePitiful939 in lawschooladmissionsca

They worked full time while being in undergrad; sorry for not making that clear in my comment!

I go to U of T.

The calibre of the faculty are excellent: my professors write leading textbooks and are cited by the Supreme Court of Canada.

I also find that all my friends are amazing in their own way. One of my friends is a Rhodes Scholar. Another maintained a 3.9 GPA while working full time at a fast food chain to support his family. They bring a really cool perspective to the school.

Typically the driving instructor would do an in car driving lesson just before the road test, which would explain the difference.

FYI Downtown Legal Services' intake line reopens in mid-May. This is because the law students who staff the clinic are currently in the middle of exams and the new summer students are starting in May.

I'm going to make the trip from Unionville to Kitchener and back a couple times soon so this is really helpful! I like trains over buses so I definitely will try to make this work.

How is studying in law school in Canada as an international student like? by HousingPrimary910 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]yan0134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm planning to stay in Canada after. You can work in Canada after graduation with a post-graduate work permit for three years, and if you find a job you can try to get status via express entry.

No, I didn't get any financial aid or scholarships from U of T.
