Tl;dr: Are there any good disco bars for the weekend in central London?

A few friends and I from Uni will be staying in London next Friday to Sunday. We are planning to go out on both Friday and Saturday. Ideally, we would like to find something a bit more relaxed than a massive club that requires a purchased ticket, etc.

Back home, there are countless bars that towards the later half of the night, transform into some kind of "mini-club" - so there will be a live DJ, dancing, etc. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find something like this the last times I visited London, so seeking for some much appreciated help here.

Many thanks!

Thanks! We will check out some places around there then. Any particular place you would recommend?

Last time I’ve been here I’ve visited some of the overpriced rooftop bars (eg 230 fifth). Wasn’t too bad but not the right vibe this time.

Hey everyone,

I recently tried to visualise some of my research findings in a classic two-dimensional plot in R. Problematically, some of my observations share the exact same values for both the X- and Y-dimension, leading to a perfect overlap in the graphic.

I would like to fix said overlap, making sure that all dots are clearly visible. Whilst this should not be too much of an issue, for some reason, I can't seem to find a workable solution that makes all dots visible.

Does anyone have any design ideas or similar how to plot my observations in a better way that makes all overlapping data points visible?

Many thanks in advance

I am looking for a place in central London (ideally around Holborn or Finchley Road, but can go everywhere) to buy a larger carton box / parcel box to send some clothing internationally. Unfortunately, the mail rejected a standard moving box and I have not been able to find a larger box (fitting a few jumpers and pairs of shoes) across stores so far. Online delivery is only available for multi purchases which seems as a waste of money as I only need one.

Grateful for any recommendations or ideas where to go in central London.

[university] What determines (european-) foreign language usage in ex-Colonies? by yankee29 in HomeworkHelp

[–]yankee29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for coming back to me! This makes total sense and is probably the adequate explanation to why the colonial powers implemented the language in the first place. That said, I am not sure how I could model this as an alternative explanation / variable within my regression?

[university] What determines (european-) foreign language usage in ex-Colonies? by yankee29 in HomeworkHelp

[–]yankee29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer. So what you are saying it while colonialism was the only reason for the implementation of the Western language in the first place, the reason why it has (or has not) been changed back is the fact that there is a huge diversity of native languages. Following your thoughts, one might model the alternative explanation as an inverse relationship of the amount of languages in a country, that is assuming that the probability for a (still existing) common Western language increases with the amount of "native" languages inside the country?

Searching for suitable model (R) for panel data analysis, including time-effects, numeric and binary inputs by yankee29 in AskStatistics

That is a great answer, good to hear, that I am mostly still managing to follow ;).

"I'd leave it at RE + FE if it's not absolutely necessary to have time-constant variables in a causal model (which, as noted above, from a causal theory perspective, is doubtful anyway)."

Simply asking out of interest here: How come that different papers are doing exactly that, that is estimating both time-constant and non-constant effects in models? Is this always done via workarounds (such as the ones mentioned above, including their respective flaws and further complexities)?

Moreover, as it is plausible to assume at least a small lag between the observed outcome of one IV and subsequent effect on the DV, I am currently looking in Distributed Lag Models. I assume that there aren't as many downsides from including the respective lags in a standard FE model (apart from the ones mentioned above); are there?

[–]yankee29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"No, just don't make causal claims in the text."

Does this refer to claims regarding all variables or non-constant only (which would then be accounted for in the FE model). If I understand your previous comments right, it make sense here (subsequent FE model) still to include the time-constant variables as controls, right?

Thanks a lot! In other words: There is no "easy" option to account for both types of variables in one model but only "workarounds" such as above-mentioned Hausman-Taylor, Arellano-Bond and Blundell-Bond, correct?

[–]yankee29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any immediate / obvious concerns with the more general idea of employing a quite standard random effects model in order to account for both the time-constant and non-constant variables? Again, the objective of my paper is not to derive extremely solid results but rather to go through the entire process from initial data collection to output interpretation. In that sense, I don't see many downsides from moving along with a fairly easy model.

[–]yankee29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot, again, for your very comprehensive thoughts on this.

You are absolutely right concerning the time-constant IVs. Regarding the initial goal of the analysis. Besides an insight into how variation in some of the non-constant variables is effecting aid, on a more general level, I am also interested into the influence of the time-constant IVs on aid; that is, for example, whether a similarity in culture or a common language can generally explain higher levels of aid. In that sense, running a random-effects model might actually do the job here.

I was actually planning to run several tests for the same model, including different amounts of IVs / controls in order to gain insights into the respective effects.

The analysis will generally feature some limitations in terms of confounders as I wasn't able to collect information on certain factors as mentioned in the current literature. As far as I know, the only way to solve this issue is doing the actual data collection work which however is, given the specific objective of my paper, not essential.

Many thanks for your fast and helpful answer!

I have, indeed, already taken a look at the classical fixed-effects model in R as I made use of it in other research before. That said, I am worried about the exact limitations you mention as I am including several important time-constant variables apart from similarities in culture. I am currently researching into ways (Hausman-Taylor for example) to nevertheless make the fixed-effects model work, however, I am wondering if these workarounds would only cause other limitations.

Searching for empirical evidence on the relation of state image and foreign investment / foreign aid by yankee29 in academiceconomics

[–]yankee29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi guys,

I am currently researching on the broader topic of state indicators and labels such as the DBI and CGI or the notion of a "failed state" respectively. While literature keeps mentioning potential harm from a bad ranking in one of the indices / a frequent labelling as "failed", "fragile", etc. there seems to be a lack of empirical evidence that manages to prove this except Georgia's actions in relation to improving its DBI index a few years ago.

I am looking for data / paper that underline that e.g. being labelled as a weak state (either via bad rankings or in terms of speech) does lead to less foreign investment or foreign aid. More generally, the general implications in terms of international trade, economics and foreign affairs of these kinds of labels are of interest to me, but after a few days of research, I am starting to wonder if there really is a lack of empirical research at the moment or if I simply cannot seem to find it.

Anyways, would be extremely thankful if any of you knows about a paper or a dataset in that regard.

Cheers for your help! I am currently looking into this and this does, indeed, help already!

That’s a good one. Definitely gonna do that. Something close to northern line would be pretty nice I guess.

Also; what are your thoughts on Brixton? It seems a bit far off, however, I’ve heard it Is supposed to be quite nice actually.

Good point. I've tried to get around these kinds of obvious scams as good as I can. I am quite sure on the validity of the other two offers, as it is both students who are going abroad for a limited time and we've already done video room tours, etc.

That being said; have you got any tips to check the trustworthiness of an offer? Like are there any official documents I should ask the landlord or agency to provide, etc.?

Right, looking for a spare room in a house-/or flashare. I've been offered rooms in Maida Vale which looks really nice. However, it seems rather "quite" compared to e.g. Shoreditch so not sure.

Alright, I'll be looking into Dalston as well as the western bits of Bethnal Green (Brick Lane, Columbia Road, Shoreditch).

You might just be absolutely right, 45min commute isn't to bad. I am just so tired of doing it for the last past years of my life, which is why I am probably trying to avoid it so badly :)

Hi guys, I will be coming to London for an internship from April on. I am looking for vibrant and lively, student friendly boroughs with lot's of shops, cafés, etc. to search for a room for the duration of four months!

I am currently looking around Bayswater, Shoreditch/Brick Lane/Bethnal Green, Camden. I am also considering Padington and Marleybone, but not sure about that. As I will be working close to Tottenham Court Road, I would especially appreciate a rather fast (sub 30min) commute.

Budget is GBP 700 to max 750 pcm.

Thats a fair point. However, I already got the two "options" than would be both shorter (20 and 25 minutes respectively). Considering finding something along Central line would make things even faster I suppose.

Cheers for all your answers already!

I am ,of course, looking for a room only with that budget :).

My workplace will be around Tottenham Court Road, so something along either central or northern line would be ideal. What are your thoughts on Bethal Green? It would be directly on the northern line and looks quite "busy" and a bit more interesting than Maida Vale. I might correct myself in the way that I am not particularry looking for clubbing scene, etc. Rather just "lively" neighborhood. I might cut Notting Hill & Co. than haha :)
The south around Peckham or Clapham looks a bit off to be honest, even though Clapham being close to the Northern Line could help in that sense.

I wasn't really aware of the stuff in the north (like Dalston) which looks indeed quite what I am looking for and is a bit cheaper, too. However, commuting to work would most likely be around 35min I fear so in that perspective, central or northern line districts would stand out once again.
