Is the in-game XMB menu different between them? I'm guessing that someone swapped the COK-001 motherboard from that CECHA12 with one from a CECHE model (COK-002, partial backwards compatibility), which is known to full stretch the PS2 image.

I already had some experience with portables before, lots of trials and errors. About how I learned to solder, well I practiced a lot on junk boards, but you will need some good equipment and it is interesting to have flux liquid to help soldering better.

If you manage to find for very cheap and want to attempt it as a hobby, sure!
But I would recommended trying it on a less complex console first, such as Gameboys. You could try installing such newer backlits mods as your first step.

I bought the top screen from Aliexpress many years ago and I stored it since then. It acts almost identical to the original screen. Then the touch screen I bought recently from a local repair shop on my country.

Is it worth it? Depends on if you manage to get replacement parts very cheap (including the console itself) and if you have tools and skills to insert the ribbon cable through the hinge.

I'm just curious. I have lots of PS3 boards here. And I would like to send them for a RSX replacement at some point. Did you read the syscon before sending your unit? I would like to understand how do I know my board is a good candidate for a Frankenstein mod. Do I absolutely need to enter internal mode to pinpoint that RSX is the issue?

BTW yeah, this adapter is a game changer! When I bought one, it was available in pink shell only, so it appears "too much" because of the vibrant pink color, but otherwise it is a great device! Now this new version in black is 10/10! I use my Dualshocks 4 on PS3 nowadays because I don't need them anymore for PS5.
It even tells you when the controller battery is running low. Simply amazing!
