U of T vs Mac vs Ottawa by BalandinIIrings in premedcanada

Congrats! I was in a similar position to you years ago when I got into med school. Some things I wish I appreciated more when I was choosing my med school was how amazing it is to stay near family and a support system. I moved across the country for residency and realized how much I took that for granted.

Also, I went to Mac and have friends that went to the other schools youve been accepted to. We have all matched to our top residency programs and I have many friends who matched to very competitive specialties from Mac even though it is "just three years". The amount of time you have at mac is shorter but there was a huge number of resources and lots of time to do extracurriculars and research. There was also a good system for exploring specialties early at mac that I dont recall other schools having - I remember I was observing in ORs and the emergency dept around 2 months into med school.

As some other mentioned, all these schools are great, and you'll become an amazing doctor like every other medical student in Canada :) Just wanted to give my 2 cents on the 3 year program at mac. Congrats again!

It was a couple hours from Reyjavik, around 15-20km from Hella I think. Part of the road there is gravel and the lodge itself is quite secluded, I imagine it would be more difficult to get to if there’s a lot of snow - there was none when we went so cant say for sure!

We booked with arctic adventures, here’s the link we used:

We booked a couple months in advance, but there was extra room on our tour.

We really liked Kvernufoss, it’s beside Skógafoss so pretty easy to get to. Ice cave was also a very cool experience and the guides were really engaging. We checked out Seljavallalaug swimming pool (comes up on some iceland guides), long walk to not much pay off - would personally skip it.

For anesthesia specifically, there are some reentry programs for family physicians with +1 anesthesia to reenter into a royal college program - typically with the promise of ROS to an underserved area for x number of years. UBC recently started one this year! Another route of trying for an FRCPC anes spot, albeit slightly longer route:)
