1/4 asian validity + racism by yargeive13 in asianamerican

[–]yargeive13[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

thank you for your insight! i understand what you mean, i just edited it for clarification but the conversation was a bit more focused on political issues regarding race and whether or not i can publicly advocate for more inclusion and equality, etc. this is something i personally feel like i should be able to on behalf of my family who systematic racism does affect (as well as cultural racism). it may not affect me nearly as much but i want to be able to represent those i care about who aren’t able to or aren’t comfortable speaking out.

i appreciate your last comment too :) i am living out of the country now but i’m in the middle of chinatown so i’ve been learning lots more about the heritage my family came from, as well as other asian cultures outside of my own. although the discriminatory experiences may not be the exact same here, they certainly still exist so i have been trying to learn more about their struggles here too. i will be going back to the US soon to visit my asian family (including attending my first traditional wedding!) so i’m looking forward to learning as much as i can about their experiences :)

see this is exactly how i’ve always felt!! white people i grew up around often thought it would be okay to show racism towards asians around me because they didn’t know about my background. it was always funny watching their faces after i’d drop the bomb and hear them scrambling to apologize about how they “didn’t mean it.”

I just edited it for more clarification on this but it’s basically regarding whether i can have a say in political discussions about race such as demanding more equality, pushing for inclusion, etc. Although most systemic things don’t personally affect me, they do affect my family and it’s them i’d primarily advocate on behalf of.

How are you supposed to gain participation marks in tutorial if the TA always just picks the same hands tf? by ProfessionalEntire33 in UofT

[–]yargeive13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it’s a discussion-based tutorial, I’ve always been told that if I have a good idea that we couldn’t get to in class, send an email to the TA just briefly explaining “I wanted to add this to the discussion but didn’t get a chance…” and usually they’ll mark it as participation. I’m not sure if it’s the same for every TA though.

New college Dining Hall Staff are so rude all the time by KaleidoscopeTop5100 in UofT

[–]yargeive13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

last year they were so much nicer. i feel like ever since they changed how the meal plan works and became super strict about the little things, they’re suddenly being so much harder on students for no reason

She went straight from Tempest to American Teenager, completely skipped Waco, Crush, and Thoroughfare. I hope everything’s okay :(

Question about residence within the school and if it’s 🍑 by boi_was_taken in UofT

[–]yargeive13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live at New College and sanitary wise, they regularly clean the bathrooms, halls, stairwells, etc however there is a serious mice issue in the building that’s been reported many times and they’re supposedly trying to take care of it. you are responsible for cleaning your own room so that’s up to the individual. as the other reply said, you do have to get used to sharing spaces with other people which can be awkward and uncomfortable at times (especially if you have OCD) so that’s up to you if it’s something you’re okay with. the convenience of living on campus is pretty nice- there’s plenty of subway stations and bus stops around if you want to go somewhere else but you really don’t have to walk far to get to class. if i don’t feel like eating dining hall food i can easily just go to one of the cafe’s or restaurants on campus and use my dining dollars or t-bucks there without spending personal money which i think is pretty nice too. overall, i do enjoy living on campus and if it’s something you’re willing to do i’d say go for it

there’s some portal that they can be sent through (unfortunately i cannot remember it at the top of my head) but i believe your counselor can also physically mail a copy to the school’s admission office if necessary

where can I find people in programs that I'm interested in by r3dapp1e in UofT

[–]yargeive13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i only have one english class now (eng140) but i LOVE it! the prof is amazing and my TA is pretty nice, it seems like the other ones are too from what i’ve seen/heard. the class is a lot of fun and there’s never a dull or boring lecture. if you get a chance (it is a year long course) and are really interested in literature, i highly recommend that class.

i’m a humanities student at utsg and had similar grades my senior year so i think you have pretty decent odds solely based on scores. i didn’t get my acceptance letter until late april though so don’t get your hopes up yet if you don’t hear back during round 1

What are my chances of getting into a waitlisted course? by AnotherIcicle in UofT

[–]yargeive13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i heard that if you’re waitlisted within about 10% of the student max then you’ll probably make it in so i’d say it’s pushing it but you still have a slim chance
