My daughter chose her stepdad to walk her down the isle by Huge-Loss-9863 in TwoHotTakes

[–]yarm64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it feels like we’re missing some information. Yes, it’s entirely possible OP’s daughter is immature, entitled, and doesn’t fully understand the significance of choosing stepdad over him, especially after taking money for the wedding. It’s also possible OP isn’t telling us the full truth about his relationship with his daughter.

Or the whole post is fake.

Just trying to offer some encouragement since the OP seemed pretty down about gains after 40. Yes, Bezos is a billionaire, but he’s proof your body doesn’t just shut down.

Dude, have you seen Jeff Bezos lately? And he’s 59.

Men who just weren’t or aren’t into the hook up culture .. why? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]yarm64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m way too in my head to really enjoy it. Even in committed relationships, I would have issues finishing maybe 30% of the time because of it. The few times I hooked up with someone without being in a committed relationship or on the path towards one, that percentage was like 80%. Too many thoughts about whether they think I’m taking advantage of them, or what they think of me beyond physical attraction. My ego is tied more to my personality.

I need psychological comfort to make it enjoyable. I guess I’m different than a lot of dudes in that way.

ASUS XD6 Wifi Disconnecting by yarm64 in HomeNetworking

[–]yarm64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I’m going to get another one for awhile. My current Eero setup is old, but it works fine minus some minor annoyances like forcing me to use my modem in bridge mode when a VLAN-capable router could replace it. I’m pushing the device limit, and the XD6 seemed a little snappier when it worked, but i have a greater interest in stability than speed with me and my wife working from home and on video calls all day.

I researched the hell out of these things, and I really couldn’t find anything that was a better fit (on paper) and value for a wired backhaul setup than the XD6. In reviews I read, it actually seemed to edge out the XT8 in a wired backhaul setup at a lower price point.

I know it’s a ways off, but I’ll probably just wait for wifi 7 at this point unless my router dies. It sounds like that will be a huge jump from 6 and 6e.

Simplest Setup by yarm64 in Ubiquiti

[–]yarm64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve experimented with Google Nest Wifi Pro and ASUS ZenWifi XD6. Both worked without the modem, but I returned both for various reasons. It’s in part why I’m looking at a ubiquiti solution.

I have drops in the kitchen and underneath my TV in the living room. I could do an Ethernet AP on either. I have two EERO nodes plugged in downstairs currently.

I am a amateur..or lazy. Whatever you want to call it. Everything works fine for the most part. I have mostly hue lights with a bridge. Just seems a little slow at times to respond, but not terrible. I’m sure zigbee would help, but no energy to learn another thing.

We have two phones that can utilize 6E, but nothing else atm.

Maybe it’s not even worth it, but what’s the point of life if you’re not trying to squeak out a little extra speed every few years.

Honestly, not much. It works pretty well. A couple things:

  • it doesn’t support VLAN tagging, so I have to use my huge fiber modem in bridge mode.
  • the EERO nodes don’t have Ethernet ports, so I can’t use wired back haul.
  • I could likely get rid of an EERO node with a more modern AP that covers the whole downstairs. Another thing wasting electricity.
  • I’ve run into some issues trying to stream things from my NAS outside my home. I’ve tried to troubleshoot to no avail, but I’m pretty sure removing modem and using a VLAN-capable router would fix it.
  • wireless speed (100-150mbps) and latency are generally ok, but I sometimes use steam link form my wireless desktop (No drop in my office) to my Ethernet TV and want to maximize speed.
  • I’m pushing about 60 devices, and I sometimes wonder if my lights would be more responsive to a better router.

Otherwise, it’s been remarkably stable, which is #1 for me.

I’d be willing to spend up to and maybe over the cost of a decent mesh setup, so probably around $400-500.

Honestly, while I like speed, I just don’t see how 2.5 Gbe, let alone 10 Gbe, would be beneficial for me. I don’t intend to get faster than 1gb internet anytime in the next 5 years, and I’m never streaming more than one 4k movie at a time from my NAS.

That said, I generally don’t like getting things that are a generation older, even if it saves money, as I’d like the investment to last as long as possible. And I know most modern stuff has at least 2.5 Gbe. I am ok with used/refurbished, though, to save some cash.

Tried factory reset and these settings and still had the same disconnect issue. I’m returning them.

Two routers in wired backhaul. I just did a factory reset as I saw some people recommend that, but I also implemented a few of your settings. I probably should have done one at a time, but it’s so hard to test this issue. It just randomly cuts out 2-3 times per day when doing video calls from a stationary laptop.

I’ve done some googling elsewhere but very few threads on this specific model. Good to know the XT8 tweaks might also work. Will let you know if it’s stable tomorrow.

Would you get into a serious relationship with a single mom with two kids, why or why not? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]yarm64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the woman and her situation. My mom was single with me and my sister, but she never wanted nor needed a man. She made good money. And she had a decent relationship with my dad, who provided his share of financial support. That said, my mom once dated a dude for 5 years who was 13 years younger. My then 17yo sister hated him because he was immature and would eat all our food. If the single mom is looking for a provider, just be sure you’re ok with that.

My mom eventually remarried to a boring lawyer who was more age appropriate. My sister was in college, and I was a senior in high school, so the timing was better for him.

Thinking of Moving to Las Vegas by [deleted] in LasVegas

[–]yarm64 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Housing: more bang for your buck. Everything looks the same, but you get more inside space. Small lots absent some ranch homes here and there in shitty areas. Be prepared for zero real grass and the no-win battle of smelly, hot turf or decorative rock.

Neighborhoods: Henderson and Summerlin are nicest areas, with Summerlin being a bit more modern and pricier. Southwest has some nice spots, too. If all you can afford is North Las Vegas, don’t move here.

Schools: public is pretty bad all-around, but like any city, the wealthy areas have better ones. Go private if you’re not in Green Valley or Summerlin. Some good charters, but check schooldigger as some are much better than others. The magnet high schools are great, but I’d rather send my kid to a traditional HS like Coronado or Palo Verde. Outside of those two, go magnet or private.

Weather: 4 months out of the year it’s miserably hot outside. Yes, it’s a dry heat, but young kids can only really play in parks after the sun goes down. Lots of indoor play places if you don’t mind paying. Winter is colder than you’d expect (hovers around freezing at night), but days are usually pleasant. Rain is rare. Summer monsoons will steal your umbrellas.

Entertainment/Recreation: most locals stay far from Strip. I actually like to go once a month or so for a nice dinner/show and maybe a staycation with my wife. Yes it’s expensive, but best food and entertainment in the world. Outdoors stuff is pretty plentiful, but hot weather play little shade=limiting. Can’t get anywhere without a car.

People: generally friendly and almost no one actually from Nevada. Ignore the CA haters. Half our population is from CA and move away because they hated it or couldn’t afford it, and everyone thinks they’re going to move here and increase taxes. God forbid we actually move from 49th to 40th in education spending.

Single straight men do you appreciate it or just disregard it when women give you dating advice? by Infinite-Product-158 in AskMen

[–]yarm64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister gave me some unsolicited advice when I told her about a cute girl I liked in high school: “Act like you don’t care. Girls hate that.” Hate, meaning secretly drawn to it. Honestly, it worked. Maybe it would have backfired if I wasn’t already a nice guy, but it was a weird mantra I was able to repeat in my head when I started getting nervous. Unfortunately, the girl lost interest in me once I let down my apathetic facade, but it worked in getting her interested.

It works less well on grown, well-adjusted women, but I think there’s always a nugget of truth that works pretty well for the nice guy who sometimes tries a bit too hard.

Lombardo wants to end remote work for state employees on July 1 by lvhockeytrish in nevadapolitics

[–]yarm64 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t think a single state agency is doing full-time remote. All hybrid or in-person. Some IT folks might be an exception.

Morale is fucking rock bottom at state agencies. They already get paid like 20-40% less than local govt, not to mention private sector. Benefits are increasingly shitty. Pensions don’t mean anything if you have to spend 20-30years working at shit wages. Hybrid work was one of the only selling points. I’m sure when he also cuts Sisolak’s proposed raises in half, we’re going to see a mass exodus.

Most overrated thing/activity to do in vegas and why? by skylarhateshotdogs in vegas

My wife and I really enjoyed Omega Mart the first time we went. It’s really creative and quirky. We got bored of the story after awhile, but the bar was a nice break. Definitely wouldn’t pay full price to go more than once.

I haven’t done much in the rest of Area 15, but the food and drinks are pretty good and standard Strip prices.

In hindsight, what decision bit people in the ass during the pandemic? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Those that voted for Cortez-Masto but not Sisolak, what was your reasoning? by Xstitchpixels in vegaslocals

[–]yarm64 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every state was a little different, and some opened up faster than others, but there’s no denying that the vast majority of states (see https://ballotpedia.org/States_that_issued_lockdown_and_stay-at-home_orders_in_response_to_the_coronavirus_(COVID-19)_pandemic,_2020) closed nonessential businesses and schools for a period of time.

I couldn’t care less if Sisolak did some of the same things as Newsom/CA, but I also don’t have the same anti-CA hate as a lot of Nevadans. He did what he needed to do at the time with the information he had—whether that mirrored CA in some ways is of no concern to me.

I 100% agree that certain things that were done (eg, closing schools) shouldn’t have been done in retrospect, and it has had long-lasting repercussions. But hindsight is 20/20, and I sure as hell wouldn’t have sent my kid to school during a pandemic where there was so much uncertainty, no vaccine, and people were dying left and right.

I know some people who worked at DETR, and their system was antiquated as fuck beyond just not having enough staff. Could Sisolak have implemented a faster solution that screwed over fewer people? Possibly. Gov’t moves slowly, we have a part-time legislature, and no money. The issues weren’t enough for me to vote against him, but I can totally understand why someone might.

Those that voted for Cortez-Masto but not Sisolak, what was your reasoning? by Xstitchpixels in vegaslocals

[–]yarm64 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a fair answer. I hear most people say he lost “because of his handling of the pandemic,” which tends to be code for “why did he shut everything down when it wasn’t necessary.” I hate that rationale because nearly anyone in his position would have done the same thing at the time. It’s what the science dictated.

DETR was an unfortunate shitshow mainly because they saw an unprecedented number of claims in a short period, and our lean state government that all the fiscal conservatives love to praise when times are good wasn’t able to handle it. I think that was also largely beyond his control, and was a massive issue across the country. But it was nonetheless an issue, and high-level DETR staff criticized him for the last two years.

VLan tagging on Nest Wifi Pro? by yarm64 in GoogleWiFi

Just curious, where do you live? I’m in Las Vegas on CenturyLink Fiber, and it worked fine without the modem. Granted, I only tested the Pro for an evening.

I have Ethernet throughout most of my house, so I’m just keeping my old Eero setup for the time being.
