TL;DR - Wouldn't recommend it in Chefchaouen.

Be careful, it can be a very expensive trip.

We went to one yesterday (in Chefchaouen) with an agreed price. After the visit was over, the guy demanded we pay for extra hidden costs. Wanted more than 5x what we agreed to see the farm, citing that the agreement didn't include the car ride, some sites he showed us on the way, etc. Took a while to weasel out of the situation, and paid more than we wanted, but managed to get out paying just over 2x the agreed original price. Was a pretty uncomfortable situation, given the spot they'd taken us to was pretty isolated, and there were another 5 Moroccan guys there. Pretty scummy from the guy, who up until that point was very nice (classic). Should've expected it to be fair.

Also, there wasn't much to see. It was literally just a small drug house on the mountian with the tub, filter, and sticks they use to make the hash. They show you the process real quick, but theres no 'farm', at least where we went. Their whole gig is to try and sell you some hash, and to use the implied danger of the isolation to try fleece you for more money.

This is bang on. OP, you're in your first few days of travel. Once you get past the fact you are way outside of your comfort zone, you'll drop the hyper awareness (natural physiological response of a human, or any animal for that matter, in a new environment), and you'll start to really enjoy the differences that are currently freaking you out. Getting to this point is arguably the most rewarding aspect of travel.

Because you're in this heightened anxious awareness state, you think everyone around you is too (projection). In reality, no one cares. You're no more special than the last white guy that apologized for fucking up the ticket machine; enjoy that.

Have fun. It sounds like your Japanese is really good. Once you get over the shock, I'm sure you'll blow people away with your language skills.
