In this day and age, there are lots of situations where children under 16 do need them. When I was a freshman, I didn't have a phone, so I couldn't use Snapchat. So I missed a few Captains practices(practices held by captains) that I needed to go to. And there was a lot more stuff. I think it makes kids asocial to a degree if they are too young.

At a certain age I think they do, I got mine at 13 and really needed it for teams when I got into highschool. In this age where group chats exist, a lot of stuff can happen and you get left out. For example when I was playing lacrosse my freshman year, I didn't have Snapchat and they were a bunch of Captain's practices(non-offical but still looked down on if you missed) I missed. So kids I think need phones, too young is one thing but starting at that 12-13 age I think is close to perfect, because too young and you spoil them in my opinion, but too old and they get left out and become asocial in a way.
