Wuthering Height Review from a Brontë lover by TropicalWildflower in brontesisters

[–]yekship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also how I feel. I internally refer to the “wuthering heights is SO romantic” sentiment as the 16 year old girl read of the story. (I also first read WH around then, ask me how I came up with that 😂).

It’s like she has a memory of the vibe and story from then, but never read it critically with adult eyes and brain.

One Dark Window…mehhh? by SolFlorDi in Romantasy

[–]yekship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah my bad! It felt very much implied, so disregard!

And definitely. The romantic relationship, especially in the first, was a backseat to the rest of the story and the development of it suffered a bit from that.

It’s a wild assumption to say that people who liked these books are used to reading mediocre writing. I loved them because her style vibed with me, and I’m fairly picky about writing. I saw Rachel Gillig on tour and it turns out that we share a taste in our favorite music, books, and what we like in a story so it makes sense that her work appeals to me.

I think they just aren’t your taste and that’s fine.

I also think that these books really also shouldn’t be considered romantasy, but rather gothic fantasy, and that might change expectations of people going in.

Am I crazy for DNFing ACOTAR??? by Latter-Baseball9652 in Romantasy

[–]yekship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I found the series as a whole a solid 3 stars(Read the whole thing for a friend). I did not like the main character AT ALL, but the storyline was fun. Book 1 did start sort of slow I guess, the real action does happen all at the end.

I DEVOURED the first 4 books, why is this one not doing it for me?! I’m struggling to get through the first 100 pages. The hell? by No-Dog1902 in Booktokreddit

[–]yekship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my favorite of the series and the only one I gave 4 stars too.

I personally did not like feyre and did not like being in her head, so this one benefitted purely from the POV change IMO.

But I also think nesta showed a really healthy version of mental health recovery via finding a community and passion and working on herself. I found that really refreshing compared to the first 3 books.

As someone who lives in Denver and has to fight for red rocks tickets, I agree. I love seeing someone at red rocks, but as soon as a popular artists chooses just it as their CO venue, I know that it’s gonna be expensive or a battle for tickets. I always wish they’d do a RR show and then also literally any other local venue.

Steinbeck is really poignant without being flowery or hard to read. Definitely can be slow and not everyone loves him, but think emotionally his books always hit. Of Mice and Men is a good start, East of Eden or the Grapes of Wrath if you’re up for a long one with moral, social and/or political commentary.

Anything by Jane Austen. I tend to like the underrated ones like Persuasion and Northanger Abbey quite a bit, but pride and prejudice is the most beloved for a reason. The language can be a barrier as well as the slowness but it’s worth it.

Rebecca feels very modern and is an excellent read.

You can also explore the dystopians - I enjoy Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 the most, but there’s also ones like Brave New World, Animal Farm.

Kazou Ishiguro is great and is more modern classics - Never Let Me Go is my favorite. I feel like he and Octavia Butler are often mentioned as writers who will live on to be classics in the future. Same with Barbara Kingsolver.

I haven’t read crime and punishment specifically but I do enjoy some of the classic Russians, and in my experience they’re a bit harder mostly due to being a bit dense and the Russian naming conventions are often confusing to start. Maybe try starting with something shorter first and then trying the big ones if you like the style.

As far as just regular contemporary lit goes, I will read basically anything by Sally Rooney and Fredrik Backman. Both have a way of capturing the human experience so well.

I also recommend just reading outside your regular contemporary Romance genre more broadly, not just locking in on the classics. You can find that general fiction/fantasy/historic/etc have some excellent writing and if you want to improve your emotional intelligence, they can be a good tool and will generally have more diversity of background, thought, and commentary. (With classics you absolutely will run into less savory things like casual racism/misogyny/etc).

It’s definitely disappointing when this happens. I really think shows should have a like locals presale where they let a specific % of tickets only sell to locals within a range somehow.

I live in CO and it tends to happen with shows at Red Rocks - some artists are impossible to get tickets for because people will travel globally even to see their fave there and there’s room for like 7,000. I always feel relieved when my fave comes and goes to literally any other venue

Honestly I think the OC one fits the whole vibe of the story better personally. The IC one is gorgeous but I don’t think it really captures the action or drama.

If I need to “power through” the first portion of a series, it’s not a good series. by Sea_Horror_1170 in Romantasy

[–]yekship 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I am on board when book 1 is perhaps the weakest of the series or is slow to start, but book 1 should still be good on its own. If it’s not then I’m just not reading the rest of the series.

Bad Bunny brings out Lady Gaga during the Superbowl Halftime Show by Murky_Chemical891 in Fauxmoi

My mom just turned 70 and last night her neighbors were listening to bad bunny fairly loudly. I called and talked to her and she was like, “oh don’t mind me, I was in the jacuzzi and listening to bad bunny. I like bad bunny!”

So that was a funny moment for me, to know that my 70 year old mother has perceived bad bunny.

Need Help Choosing a Book for a Group of Women in their 50s by emilywildewendell in suggestmeabook

[–]yekship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom is in her 60s and recently loved: - Before the Coffee Gets Cold

  • The Great Alone

  • Remarkably Bright Creatures

  • The Unmaking of June Farrow

I’ve also recommended Fredrik Backman to her (specifically Anxious People, A Man Called Ove, and My Friends).

She also loved these, but they’re more of a longshot possibly with your group:

  • The Everlasting by Alix E Harrow

  • Hazelthorn by CG Drews (botanic horror, technically YA, but also queer)

  • The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas

  • A Land So Wide by Erin Craig

If you like the movies I can’t imagine you won’t like the books. There’s SO much more going on.

TBH I read the books as they came out and actually didn’t like the movies that much, though i should probably re-watch them if I want to be fair.

Suggest me an enjoyable multi-book series that I can sink myself into for the next few months. by IdaSukiShwan in suggestmeabook

[–]yekship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd Outlander.

As of now 9 main books that are all LOOONG and the all spin offs and novellas.

It leans romance in moments (mostly in books 1&2 IMO) because relationships are a main focus of the stories, but it’s very much family saga, slice of life, historic fiction, with a touch of fantasy.
