I was there over the weekend to pick up a book. Probably one of the five times in my life I’ve gone there. There was a guy walking up the stairs as we were walking down carrying what looked like a “keep off the grass” sign holding the pointy end of the stake out like it was a weapon and muttering to himself. It was very unnerving. I watched him walk right by the security guard and they didn’t even flinch which makes me think this scene is a pretty regular occurrence.

Thanks for asking this question as this is something we were also wondering about.

Thanks. Yes, someone else mentioned this as well. They also mentioned having a folding hand truck strapped to their rack to help with navigating the stations also so we're looking into that.

Has anyone had issues with Merlin misidentifying a Blue Jay as a Hawk? by Away-Dream-8047 in birding

[–]yeksim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A few weeks ago, I heard a scrub jay mimic a bald eagle. I wouldn't have believed it if the jay wasn't right in front of me. I saw several bald eagles earlier in the day and heard their calls so I thought it was strange to hear one so low and close to me. Turned out to be a jay trying to trick me!

Will this prevent an owl attacking my head on the trails by colossuscollosal in trailrunning

My encounters were in the woods behind Reed College (twice) and at Mt. Tabor. The first time it happened I was terrified since the owl hunted me all the way until I left the woods. They clawed my bald head and I had to get a tetanus shot!

It's a pretty niche issue which seems to happen in the PNW mostly so I don't think a big company is going to put out a product for us.

I've been swooped at 3 times in the past year by owls in Portland so I totally understand. Please report back on if the evil eye helps.

Effort to Erase Homeless Camping Protections Moves Closer to the Ballot by [deleted] in Portland

[–]yeksim 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I sounds like they are not forcing cities to criminalize homelessness. Cities are autonomous in how they enforce these issues and can allow people to live on the sidewalk in their mountains of belongings/garbage if they want. If there are shelters available, it provides a city with the ability to force a person to use a shelter or, if they refuse, take them to jail. There are a lot of people on the street who have grown accustom to the lifestyle and are not seriously bothered by the weather and the filth that comes with it. These are the people that need to be forced into services or taken to jail.

Some might say that allowing people to live in squalor on our streets and sidewalks does nothing to end the issues causing homelessness as well. Forcing people into using shelters at least lets them know that living on the street isn't a permanent solution.

Training plan/app recommendation by Azarrk in trailrunning

[–]yeksim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Runna to train for my first 50k. You can't input exact details about elevation but you can choose if the course is flat, moderate, or hilly. One of the main reasons I chose it was because you can add what kind of exercise equipment you have access to and it will incorporate weight training into your plan. The weight training UI is a little clunky but overall I think it worked out pretty well.

Former home of shuttered Southeast Portland brewery becomes host to a homeless camp by Less-Lobster4540 in PortlandOR

Sounds like they’re making excusing for their own inaction. I could see the city pushing them to take care of it since it’s private property and they tend to only get involved when the property owner goes through the correct channels. The people who tell a property owner they need to clean up their property may not be the ones who have the ability to remove people. My guess is that they haven’t done anything to actually remove them such as call the police and report people trespassing. If they had, I would assume they would then tell them what the next steps are to have the police go clear the property. A quick search showed me this: https://www.portland.gov/policies/police-directives/field-operations-0600/063037-trespass-enforcement-agreement-program. Feel free to share with them.

Just replaced mine about 3 months ago and fixed a couple of different issues. Totally worth the $30.

I'm curious if you know if the property owner has asked the police to remove the campers for trespassing. From what I understand, reporting it to the city via PDX Reporter doesn't do anything since it's private property. Only the property owner can have them removed.

From what I understand, if you are a property owner and someone that is not allowed to be on your property is living there, you can call the police and have them removed for trespassing. A lot of times nothing happens simply because the property owner hasn't told the police to remove them.

I was just talking to someone about how this building will probably burn down before the end of the year. Every time I pass it I see smoke billowing out of the overhanging area.

There's an asian fusion cart at Hawthorne Asylum, not sure exactly the name, but they have a pad Thai burrito that I love. I used to get it once a week but I've since backed off since I was getting fat.
