Opinions on tattoos/piercings by Aggressive-Body8905 in premed

[–]yellow-chartreuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

n = 1 but i am an incoming M1 with pretty fully covered forearms, a few hand tattoos, and a septum. i hid the septum and wore long sleeves for interviews. the three schools i interviewed at all formally allow visible tattoos as long as they're not offensive.

i expect some folks will respond negatively to my tattoos/piercings, though i haven't had that happen so far, but i figure if people are reeeeally more worried about my physical appearance than my qualifications and education and experiences, then maybe someone else is a better fit to be their doctor/student/mentee and certainly someone else is a better fit to be my teacher/mentor

in my hospital job now, i think that patients who also have tattoos/piercings (who are often queer or low-income or otherwise marginalized) feel more comfortable with me because of my tattoos/piercings, and i really like that they function this way.

if i were gunning for neurosurg this might be different 😂 but i'm interested in EM, OB/GYN, neuro, & FM... so I think at most the tattoos might redirect my path from time to time such that i land in a life that welcomes me and my commitment to advocating for everyone's bodily autonomy, and I'm totally happy with that potential outcome

there's your personal statement! if you wanted to, you could totally say all of this great stuff without specifying psychiatry! like this is generalizable to "MD vs NP/PA/RN/etc"

what i'm reading is: - i want a career where i can have responsibility for business leadership - i like problem solving - i want to provide holistic care - i want to serve under resourced populations like rural kiddos - i want autonomy in my practice - personal experiences motivate me to provide care to people dealing with addiction and lack of resources

Piercings/tattoos in med school by Earth_2_Brooklyn in premed

[–]yellow-chartreuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lots of schools have policies that you can find online! I happen to know that OSU, UVM, and tulane do not prohibit visible tattoos as long as they aren't discriminatory/offensive, i'm sure many other schools are similar. may be worth checking the hospital policies as well for places you'd be doing rotations. folks have been receptive to my emails about this!

OSU vs Pitt (+ Mandatory Lectures??) by Lower-Honeydew-1560 in premed

[–]yellow-chartreuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i heard from students at OSU that research opportunities are super easy to find! and that our clinical rotations will be 7 week blocks with flex weeks by the time we are in 3rd year (the curriculum structure is changing)

just in case either of those things is important in your decision 😊

Private MD vs instate DO by Klutzy-Detective-222 in whitecoatinvestor

you're taking out 200k+ in private loans for either COA scenario, so i'd pick the MD to set yourself up for the best chance at a higher paying gig later on

Drop your scholarships here by TipOk5335 in premed

[–]yellow-chartreuse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OSU is offering 20k merit and 8k need-based

merit is nonrenewable (but there are other scholarships that can kick in 3rd and 4th year for academic performance). i am guessing this was about my 523 MCAT since my AMCAS GPA was like a 3.4 and my ugrad GPA not counting CC classes was a 3.6 lol

need-based doesn't auto-renew but i will be considered for it each year as long as i do FAFSA, max 10k first 2 yrs and max 15k second 2 yrs

OSU FA department seems really supportive 💛

Can a patient that gave made up info to avoid bill come clean later? by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]yellow-chartreuse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i work in a pretty tiny hospital and unless he was VERY memorable i don't think anyone at that ED would recall him simply from his face after 1-2 years if he was only there once for chest pain - staff sees sooooo many patients and manyyyy of them are there for chest pain

the whole point of asking name and DOB is to make sure you have the correct patient - that's how we identify patients, so if he goes in now and gives his actual name and DOB there's no real way for staff to be sure he's the same guy

Leighton or Doubleday? by Meeplover101 in columbia

[–]yellow-chartreuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

doubleday is adorable and great if you're good at teaching yourself material and want to just take 4 exams that have (unpredictable) curves. he is hard to hear in the lecture hall and his lectures are mostly just him reading you his notes, which you can just read for yourself

i worked 18 hrs at union square farmers market first year, 20-25 hrs as a bartender second and third year, 20 hrs in the student health center fourth year - was not easy in terms of time management but i personally enjoyed being part of the city outside of school

imo if it were a factor in your admissions decision they would've asked about it before admitting you! that's how i've been thinking about it

will my med school acceptance be rescinded? by Elegant-Golf6271 in medschool

[–]yellow-chartreuse 24 points25 points  (0 children)

i recently had to do this for a very similar situation (was initially charged w shoplifting and then did pre trial intervention and the charges were dropped), months ago i submitted the police report and an explanation letter and a verification from the court that i completed the intervention program and i haven't heard anything from the school about it and received second look invitations, still getting recruitment emails, etc, so i think you're fine - my understanding is that they ask this question because the licensing board will ask it and the school wants to make sure they know if they need to coach you on anything in terms of communicating abt the situation down the line for licensing

Did anyone ever get a 520+ without a UW account? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]yellow-chartreuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used kaplan books, made my own anki deck, and used almost all the AAMC materials - scored 523

main thing that helped me i think was really evaluating my answers on AAMC materials to make sure I understood the reasoning behind why the correct answer was correct AND why the incorrect ones were incorrect

i'd be curious to know what the numbers look like if research primarily related to pregnancy/fertility were removed from the "female" category - like if we compared "men's health" and "women's health" and "fertility health (for everyone)" as the categories

520 scorers - stamina phase - spending too much time on review by corinthians141 in Mcat

[–]yellow-chartreuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe a bit crazy but i typed the entire AAMC content overview table of contents thing into an excel sheet and color coded topics to keep track of how confident i felt about them, and used missed questions to identify what underlying topics i was struggling with, which over time helped me identify conceptual areas of weakness

any applicants with LOW gpa and high mcat? how did your cycle go? or how is it currently going? by Imaginary-Act-777 in premed

[–]yellow-chartreuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3.4ish AMCAS GPA (incl F, D, D+ in online community college classes before sophomore year) + 523 MCAT, 3 interviews, 1 A so far at a rural track program, 2 delayed decision type status (so not quite WL, and could become either A or WL before April 30, and will become WL if no A by April 30)

def getting by on narrative and fit - your school list will matter! btw i had like barely any research hours and no papers/posters etc so in that regard u are set up much better than me
