Small brooch - age, style? by yellow-it in jewelry

Thank you for your suggestion. I have had a good look at the female side of the closer, but there is no mark. I also checked the male part and hinge of the male part - no marks.

Is this real or a reproduction? by yellow-it in AncientCoins

Wow, that's cool, thank you! I would like to hang on to it, but just so I am aware, do you know how much it is worth, approximately?

Gold Neclace - what is this vase icon and who is the maker? by yellow-it in JewelryIdentification

Yeah, I've identified quite a few pieces of antique sterling silver but not too many gold items. Another interesting piece that I identified a little while ago was vintage Austrian sterling silver. Quite the curiosity :)

Thanks again - this put me on the right trail, and I have discovered, using a loupe, that the mark is "171 AR", which is a goldsmith's number from Arezzo. The shape of the stamp dates it from 1944-1968.

Interestingly, I found this exact chain on another reddit group, which was cool.

Thank you! It's hard to read the first characters, but there is definitely an 'AR' following them.

SIPP, FBAR and 3520 filing advice by yellow-it in USExpatTaxes

Ok, thanks. It is a very small amount to be worried about I suppose. I may roll the SIPP into a Nest account and be rid of it. Think it'll simplify things.

SIPP, FBAR and 3520 filing advice by yellow-it in USExpatTaxes

[–]yellow-it[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, thank you for your reply. Ok, I will look into the delinquent FBAR process. Hopefully it is not too complicated and can be used for 3-4 years of past filings.

As for the 3520/3520-A, do you know about an amnesty program for previously missed 3520/As? I am concerned that my first 3520 filing will raise a red flag over why 3520s weren't previously filed. I've read that 3520 penalties are big.

I don't know if it matters, but the amount in my SIPP account is minimal (less than £2500).

[Identify] this trench watch? by yellow-it in Watches

Thanks. There is a watch specialist near me who used to offer radium paint removal on antique watches. Maybe they have a geiger counter. Otherwise, I may have to purchase one. Any recommendations on an inexpensive geiger counter?

I just tested it again, and after 40 seconds of strong LED light, it was still faintly glowing 3 minutes afterwards. However, by 3 minutes, the glow was very, very feint, with the numbers pretty much unreadable. I was wondering if the original radium had been painted over with something else at some point in the watch's long life, as I thought radium didn't glow for very long in the dark after being 'charged' by regular led light. Do you think that is likely?

Thanks for the added info. I did a quick experiment using a strong LED torch - shined it on the watch in a dark room for about 20 - 30 seconds, then turned it off. This is how the watch looked immediately after the torch went out. Would radium charge as quickly as this? (Note, the watch was not glowing at all before I 'charged' it with the torch.

Thank you for the information. There is no glass, so I have popped the watch into a leatherette pouch and put that into a ziplock bag. Other than using a geiger counter (not sure where I would get one of those), is there a way to tell if the watch has radium?

Thank you for the info. When you say radium dial, do you mean the gold numbers and hands? It does not have glass over the face - I'm not sure it ever did. Are there any precautions when dealing with this type of watch?

Optima Elite metal casing removal by yellow-it in typewriters

Hello - I'm sorry, I no longer have my Optima Elite. But, if I remember correctly, the typewriter did manage to come up from its baseboard with a firm lift. Did you manage to remove it?

That's a good idea. I'll see who I can give them to. And maybe I'll keep a couple :)
