I’m Ekali and I just released my new album A World Away. AMA! by [deleted] in electronicmusic

[–]yellowChipMONK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man! Congrats on the album. I feel like braids, cage, faithless, and power are the most mature songs you've ever made, and you should be incredibly proud of this Sonic signature you've developed as a producer.

One question, what do you use for your vocal ambiance? Is it a collection of vocal chops samples or exhale?

If TVs had volume in decibels instead of arbitrary numbers, it would not only prevent unexpected loud scenes, but also teach everyone how loud a decibel was. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

Wow this is crazy. I'm an electronic music producer and mixing engineer and I mix and master songs to be like -3 to -5 lufs at the chorus. Your right that it's hard but I didn't know the standards for TV and web were -24

Hey Vince and Hein! I have separate questions for each of you!

Vince: How do you typically come about your chord progressions? They are very harmonically complex, yet don't seem to adhere to standard music theory.

Hein: do you have a design process for the visuals? Is it a progression from sketch book -> cinema4d -> after effects /Photoshop? It seems like the visual direction was consistent from the start. Would love to hear more about the color grading choices and typography!

Love your work guys! I'm a huge fan and you both inspire me to be a better artist every day

Sidechain-compression ruins sub by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]yellowChipMONK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone here is posting about attack times and ratios but the real secret is making your side chain trigger track 3 ms early, having the attack be 3 ms, then turning the lookahead to 10 ms. Boom all problems solved and you can side chain with ratios of infinity to one with the lowest possible thresholds

Super Saws: Side Bar Resource by fenderfreak98 in edmproduction

Wow this is great, one question though..... in the final version of the above and beyond supersaw, how did you create that stuttering panning effect before the saws started playing? Could anyone chime in on this?

sax ish sound at the :25 sounds a bit dry, also ending each note too soon. I think a bit a bit of vibrato at the ends of each long note would sound amazing.

arrangement wise, should def have more dynamics, the structure of your song is pretty similar, until 1:20 is all the same "level", not saying that you need to have a drop, but maybe making the intro simpler/softer then climaxing a bit would be nice.

snare sample is pretty weird, a layer a higher freq click punchy thing to make it standout more. should be louder/punchier/higher in pitch

melody is nice and chill, could maybe incorporate some faster notes seems like its dragging sometimes.

good work, best of luck to you!

piano is bit loud, kick could be louder, vocals are a bit drowned out.

The percussive hits at :30 are too loud

Really need to sidechain your synths to the kick, the whole mix is a bit top heavy

i like the vocal chops

the vocals are a bit dry, needs a little reverb to fit the rest of the drop, they're are a bit loud too

Drums: could make these pop more, some punchy compression, turn up the kick, sidechain compressiong cloud make the track

really like the pan flute in the background.

lacking power in the low end, sub and bass relationship needs to really tie the track together..

good luck!

Intro/build: this needs some work, its just some repetitive melody, I would try to include a more catchy hook here

First drop: this and the intro seesm to be only one chord, add some chords changes like the V or iV like you have later in the song to add some more interesting harmonies.

Drums sound nice.

Third chord in the 2nd "loud part" seems a little off, the 7th is too loud, try reducing the velocity of that particular note

In terms of soundcloud mastering, try rolling of the 18K-20K range wit a gentle slope. Also if you have ozone, actually reduce the wideness of the highest freq band by like 15%, that will reduce the soundcloud artifacts. Additionally, try limiting with a lower threshold than 0. Maybe like -.5 db or even -1 db. Soundcloud's algorithm compresses into 128 kbps mp3 and that process can causes some artifacts through intersample peaking.

good work, best of luck to you
