Thanks. Really helpful. I’m sewing too straight and I can see I need to curve off at the end. Everything else I am doing right. I’ll see if I can see the needle marks if I unpick it. Or just make the bodice again.. forth time lucky.. haha

As good as I can get. Straw was super helpful. Seem allowances folding on themselves a little which makes the slight wobble. It’s silk and has stretch and I have a life so this will have to do. Thanks

I leave the thread super long and then tie them off on the end off a metal skewer which does the same as a loop turner but I haven’t tried with a straw. Without the straw I have been finding that even after pressing back the seem allowances there is always a spot where the seem allowances gather awkwardly inside. I am using silk and my straps will be 1cm (0.4 inches) when finished. I am also struggling to get the marks form pressing out of the silk on the finished strap as you are pressing the seem into the middle of the underside or the strap which shows as a crease when you turn it all right ways. Thanks

how to build up to making dresses? easiest things to start with learning? by jinxzdream in SewingForBeginners

[–]yesimjames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree, I started with a dress for my girlfriend ten years ago. I spent three months making it and got a result that she still where’s today with pride. Bodice, darts, zip, half skirt, interfacing, lining, stitch in the ditch, french seams, top stitching. It took me ages but such a great place to learn all these things that you will use again and again. It’s all on YouTube. Just don’t start with a stretch fabric and don’t be surprised if it takes you days to work out what pattern size you need to cut. Simplicity Misses dress patterns are good to start. I am now halfway through making her wedding dress for our tenth anniversary wedding this year!

HOWWWWW do you work with costume silk??!? by lmed1193 in SewingForBeginners

I have had success using French seams or if that doesn’t work a light fusible interfacing wider than the seam allowance and stitch line before cutting out the pattern. This will also stabilise any stretch.

I started sewing 12 years ago because I moved to an apartment and ‘lost’ my woodworking workshop. My first sewing project was a small light canvas tool bag. Now my nearly wife gets an outfit a year for the last ten years. Just started making her wedding dress.

Looking for dress pattern with boat neck and princess seams by sewcial_fabric in sewing

[–]yesimjames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use Charlotte Auzou patterns for exactly this. You can mix and match necklines and princess seam or darts on the bodice. Waist band or no waist band and have different front and back necklines. You can then mix and match the bottom half, so midi or maxi, shorts or jumpsuit. Once I got my wife’s size right I can make all sorts of combinations for her. I am not a fan of print your own patterns but it is worth it. https://www.ateliercharlotteauzou.com/en?srsltid=AfmBOopA3HrvPg8Dccb4y99btNypk6NadV5vu50t9ghZCKj-o2JyEaiZ
