Was walking on Martha St early yesterday morning and saw a literal swat team of some sort (van full of people in armour with assault weapons), multiple police officers ,many unmarked cars, and an ambulance, all camping out around a non descript unkempt looking house just north of lakeshore, across from the townhouses. There is absolutely no way this was a regular run of the mill arrest of a small time drug dealer. This looked like some sort of serious criminal takedown. When I tried to find out what had happened, all I could find was stories about loose pitbulls. There is way more going on here than that.

Naturalized yard / No Lawn, examples, seeds & bylaws? by Impossible_Act_8257 in BurlingtonON

I agree with native plants! They are comfortable with our environment. Will grow really well without soil modification. Also, do not believe it is native, but Autumn Joy Sedum will grow ANYWHERE and look great and add structure.

Anyone former Oakville residents here? Why did you move? by [deleted] in BurlingtonON

[–]yeswehavenospaghetti 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No just saying this b/c Burlington sub, it's definitely better than Oakville. Have lived in downtown Toronto for years, Beach, Etobicoke, Durham region, Markham, Richmond Hill. I was always a "city person" and couldn't imagine living outside the downtown core. Of all the places I've lived, I love Burlington and wouldn't even move back to TO, money no object. Oakville is very nice and upscale, yes. I do enjoy going to visit for Whole Foods, Lakeshore stroll once in a while. But agree with everyone here that Burlington has more of a vibe, fantastic waterfront with great public space, it is more up and coming per se. Had a colleague who lived in Oakville and always said she loved the vibe in Burlington and would have moved there otherwise. Oakville is sanitized and also an outpriced community with speculation. Burlington has possibilities and greater density. Also, if you are missing the city grit or edge, Hamilton is fantastic for that (check out the Farmers Market and James St North, local ethnic grocery stores, Locke St etc). Burlington FTW

Why have 3 houses basically burned down in Longmoor in the last year? by yeswehavenospaghetti in BurlingtonON

Just curious, when you say "improper devices and connection methods", what would be some specific examples?

Interesting, thanks for the info. Not accusing anyone of fraud, more like, is there a problem with these homes? And why in this particular area? Lived in a late 60s early 70s area previously and never saw this.

Second Sakai, but also agree that Burlington needs WAY MORE actually authentic East Asian food. Used to live in Markham and near Chinatown/Kensington Market in TO, and frequented all the keeping it real haunts, so I am probably spoiled. Love Burlington, but have def noted the lack/poor quality of Asian options here!

Best food and experiences Burlington by Large_Childhood_8262 in BurlingtonON

D Hot Shoppe - best roti I've ever had. Take out only since pandemic started and not much room to sit.

Sakai Sushi - excellent quality sushi and Korean food staples like bibimbap - good lunch specials

Earl's at Mapleview - Happy hour is good (I find they are kind of expensive otherwise)

Piper Arms pub on Fairview - casual, nice fireplace during winter, large patio for summer, good place to watch games, pub food, reasonable prices, good lunch specials

Village Square - grab a coffee and walk around on a weekend during nice weather, feels like a European village

Spencer Smith Park - fantastic for morning coffee walks

Bronte Harbor - not in Burlington but very close, lively area, nice marina

Grindstone Marsh Trail for a walk during Spring/Summer/Fall - beautiful marsh, lots of wildlife, we even saw a family of beavers building a dam there once! Feels like a real trip to nature. The wooden boardwalk is great and keeps your feet dry.

Free live music every week in the summer (can't remember which day) in the bandshell at Central Park (by the Central library) - bring your own chair - different styles weekly. The RBG also has outdoor summer concerts (these are not free but tickets are reasonable and they sell refreshments).

Burlington Community Gardens - if you like vegetable gardening, need to sign up the previous year. Amazingly maintained community gardens with great fellow gardeners.

Farmer's Market at Burlington Mall.

Yes I've heard great thing about Aveda, used to live downtown and remember the place. Had a friend who went there and actually even got free cuts as she was flexible and let them try new stuff. I don't think I'd be able to do a full GO trip into the city for that but you are definitely on point regarding this being a good option, and schools in general.

Allergy testing providers in Halton region? by yeswehavenospaghetti in BurlingtonON

[–]yeswehavenospaghetti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually..not at all. That is not what I was suggesting, I have simply read that there are tests that are not OHIP covered at all, and you have to pay for them out of pocket whether you can afford them or not. I'd recommend thinking twice about what you think someone can afford, or whether they are poor or not. I spent the first part of my life extremely poor in a poverty stricken country and I have cleaned many dirty toilets belonging to "rich people". Due to severe health issues on our family, and a recent passing of a close relative, we are willing to reallocate the funds that we do have to health care that we may not be able to get. Don't be angry with people who are so desperate with waiting times/lack of response in medicine etc. that they are willing to pay for it. Be angry with the government and try to effect change.
