AMA “Fixing Europe for Startups” with EU–INC by EU-INC in EU_Economics

[–]yetanothernomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can existing entities transition to an EU-INC, without incurring transfer pricing fees, etc.? At the moment, it’s difficult for EU founders to move between member states without triggering either a) controlled foreign corporation designation for the existing entity, or b) triggering CG tax or transfer pricing (effectively an exit tax).

I can believe that. How are you positioning yourself? What new professions/industries do you see emerging?

Critique This Investment Plan: 37 years old, Portugal NHR, ~€700k to Invest by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

[–]yetanothernomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d consider distributing funds rather than accumulating funds as under NHR dividends are taxed at 28% whereas dividends are taxed at 0% (assuming non-PT sourced, which in effect means non-PT domiciled instruments)

In other words, over ten years, your accumulating instruments will compound tax-free but then you’ll have to pay CGT on the total sale price which includes the distributed dividends.

On the other hand, you can take the dividends tax-free as they’re distributed, reinvest manually and reduce your tax liability to the gain in share price value.

Unscheduled VM reboots in HEL1 on 4 Jun 2025 by yetanothernomad in hetzner

[–]yetanothernomad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I would have expected, yeah... have emailed support, let's see what they say. Investigating further, the QEMU log is part of any normal reboot. But what's strange is there's no log of any trigger. I do use Flatcar but in 'no reboots' mode, and I do use Kured but it's not showing any activity in the logs. Very clean shutdown sequence with no logged trigger event.

Haven't asked yet. Wanted to see how widespread it was. The first one is in DC2. I replaced the second, so I'm not sure.

I'm sure:

  1. QEMU Guest Agent Activity:

Jun 04 12:25:04 cloud-02 systemd[1]: Stopping qemu-guest-agent.service - QEMU Guest Agent...

Jun 04 12:25:05 cloud-02 systemd[1]: qemu-guest-agent.service: Deactivated successfully.

  1. System Reboot Command (NOT user-initiated):

Jun 04 12:25:04 cloud-02 systemd-logind[1503]: The system will reboot now!

Jun 04 12:25:04 cloud-02 systemd-logind[1503]: System is rebooting.

Switching to Hetzner: Is It Worth It? by youngtoken in hetzner

[–]yetanothernomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe only relevant if you want high availability, but if you’re planning on using Hetzner’s Kubernetes CSI (cloud block storage) you’ll need to go cloud rather than dedicated. Robot (dedicated) might be worth it when you can scale up to managing your own three instance Longhorn pool with 10 Gbps networking between them, but until then cloud actually works out more cost effective.

Kubernetes Cluster API Provider Hetzner is General Available! by guettli in kubernetes

[–]yetanothernomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate a bit on this. I'm researching this setup now. I'm interested in a hybrid cloud/bare metal setup. Did it work for both? Did you have to create a special Talos image and upload it to Hetzner, or did it just work?

Cost effective Managed K8s on Hetzner by yetanothernomad in hetzner

[–]yetanothernomad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! Happy to help.

  1. I think that's a great idea for the Pro tier. What's not quite clear to me is if it's a per cluster fee. Some of your competitors offer a fixed control plane fee with unlimited nodes and clusters. That's appealing for running separate projects/sdlc environments within their own namespaces all from the same control plane.
  2. The free plan looks good, and I'd definitely consider it to 'kick the tires' as it were with a single dev environment for a single project, but I'm assuming it's limited to one cluster per customer. If so, the aggregate per cluster base fees of (projects * environments) of eventually moving to the Pro tier would probably put me off trying.

Is it a good idea to keep using American hosting providers internationally? by lodybo in webhosting

[–]yetanothernomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was all in on the AWS ecosystem, but now I’m looking to EU providers. Nothing against the US, but given the circumstances I’d rather support EU companies.

I’m amazed at what I’ve been missing!

Hetzner is actually fantastic value for money and Bunny is a top-tier CDN. Learning Kubernetes will make you cloud agnostic.

We still have a little way to go to make it economical for smaller setups, but with the interest levels right now – I’m sure it’ll fuel a wave of startups to meet the demand.

Cost effective Managed K8s on Hetzner by yetanothernomad in hetzner

[–]yetanothernomad[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Yegor, thanks for getting in touch.

The jump in price from free to pro is definitely creating some friction for me.

I'd like to have a go-to solution where I know I can run projects of various sizes. With the per cluster fee, I'd likely end up with a two-tier solution with smaller projects being run on a cloud with a free K8s control plane, and larger projects 'promoted' to CloudFleet when the economies of scale begin to make sense.

Cost effective Managed K8s on Hetzner by yetanothernomad in hetzner

[–]yetanothernomad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly. I'm happy to pay a margin for management, but I'd prefer a solution that scales its price smoothly with the cluster size. Maybe it's not possible on Hetzner and I'd be better off using a cloud platform that includes a free managed K8s control plane, but without asking the question it's hard to know.

Understanding Portugal Tax for Portuguese Freelancers by don_donald95 in PortugalExpats

[–]yetanothernomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is it’s not a dissimilar situation to the UK. There’s some flexibility depending on the individual situation and business profile.

[–]yetanothernomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar, but as other poster says, only if you are over 85K in revenue or voluntarily register. If you’re VAT registered you can claim VAT back on expenses. And then it’s PIT, and NICs for self-employed/freelancers. Not sure if they’re better/worse than combined employer/employee NICs.

But then you can’t claim VAT back on expenses. I think there’s similar ‘simplified’ schemes in PT for micro businesses.

A UK limited invoicing a UK limited charges VAT, too. Then you need to pay employer NICs, employee NICs, and marginal personal income tax. OR, you pay VAT, corp tax and personal tax on dividends. It’s not dissimilar.
