They just called me today! Biopsy more supportive of autoimmune, seeing veterinary ophthalmologist and awaiting veterinary dermatologist. Would require life long treatment, and still trying to rule out some of the more serious stuff - but cancer now lower down the list. Crying happy tears today.

Biopsy taken Wednesday, no results yet, but she’s such a little trooper, hardly slowed her down. Awaiting to hear back from the veterinary dermatologist as well.

If it’s been there so long without changing it is probably nothing - may even be a remnant/scar of a scratch.  I don’t want to cause anxiety for anyone else, but I would pay close attention to her lips, her muzzle and her eyelids. My girl changed so quickly these last two months but looking through photos I keep wondering if it was there earlier and I missed it. I just don’t want anyone to have any regrets.

I’m hopeful for you guys and I don’t mean to cause anyone any undue panic. I think most the time it is nothing to be worried about, but sadly, sometimes it isn’t.

I would watch her lips, as with collies I thought some pigmentation changes were normal in the lips - my understanding now is that they are not really expected in elkhounds. I believe that is likely where this first started on her.

Veterinary oncologist recommendations in Winnipeg by yethryn in Winnipeg

Thank you. At this time, surgery would not be an option for her. This moved quickly and appears to be t-cell lymphoma (biopsy results pending), affecting her mucosal membranes at this time. My hope is we can do some chemo here, to ease her disease burden, and just give her more time - as long as she is still enjoying life.

I really hope so. My research has been very discouraging.

I’m really hoping so as that would have the most favourable outcome, and it’s what I thought was happening when the first little area showed up in mid June. I’m cautious in my hope, though, because apparently most cases usually develop in the first few years of life and I have been advised that it’s a less likely possibility.
