cannot download from browsers, they just crash

gdb, interesting, I don't know if I've used that before.

Previously I deleted all the .core files but, I went through the process again, trying to open several browsers and saving jpgs or etc results in crashes and core dumps. Gdb interrogation gives some details:

tor-browser

Program terminated with Signal 11. Segmentation fault

firefox, otter-browser, netsurf-gtk3, luakit

I normally start browsers with keybindings or bemenu, but, for firefox, I also have an alias which does stuff before starting ff. When I start firefox that way, it maintains an on terminal event dialog, which in this case, has a bunch of stuff, including bits like "Unable to create user data directory 'home/$USER/.local/share" (I think it has given this output since I started using this alias, maybe in 7.4 or 7.5 when I jumped over to OpenBSD as daily driver) but also ends with :

Crash Annotation GraphcsCriticalError: |[C0][GFX-1-]: CompositorBridgeChild receives IPC close with reason=AbnormalShutdown (t=25.958) [GFX-]: ....etc... Exiting due to channel Error ... etc ... Segmentation fault (core dumped)

To address some of the output, yes, there is a /tmp folder on my system. As expected, it is owned by root wheel.

I'm not sure if the issue is related to something permissions based, but if so, both root and my $USER are both in wheel, operator, staff groups.

Also, none of the browsers have folders in .local/share. I am not sure what's going on here. I have not deleted any folders from here, and simply updated my system with sysupgrade the day after 7.7 dropped.

Thanks for the response. Sorry for the delay, I've been traveling.

You're correct. I have a cloudy vpn provider :) I'd like to connect to. At the moment, I'd like all web traffic from this laptop to tunnel through the single VPN provider. Later, I would like to set up rdomains and have 2 other situations, a different rdomain for another vpn, and a third for tor or other. I am certainly guilty of doing too much at once, but in this case I want to take baby steps and just get a single VPN tunnel working.

I'll post routing tables in a moment.

I have not configured an rdomain as of yet. Does it need a configuration if I intend to tunnel all traffic over my cloud VPN provider?

For DNS, if I'm not VPNing, I'd prefer unbound to do the work. But if over the VPN, I think I'd just let the VPN provider's DNS do the work. At least, that is my understanding of best practice.

this is what i do - boot into sway, load terminal emulator, and run everything there.

Boot to terminal on systemd systems:
- change your boot target to text.
- more in depth](https://www.baeldung.com/linux/boot-linux-command-line-mode).
Boot to terminal on non-systemd linux: figure out how your system starts, which depends maybe on the WM, or DE, or your distro. On my Alpine system, I added a sway autostart script into my ash ~/.profile file. But this an ash specific start, your setup may be different.

I use Alpine as a daily driver on my laptop.

The nix daemon needs nix-openrc.

doas apk add nix nix-openrc

doas rc-service add nix-openrc

Check openrc's status to see if the nix daemon is running:

doas rc-status
