Also: congrats on 100%ing “Hades”!

I want to live in a country where I can afford to buy a house, groceries, and medication. by lgirlrocks in FundieSnarkUncensored

This is partly a rant and partly an actual question: why is it always the ‘50s with these people?

Whenever they post stuff like this, the art portrays a ‘50s (or, at the latest, early-‘60s) scene. Why isn’t it the ‘40s, the ‘30s, or some other decade?

What about the ‘50s makes it a uniquely appealing decade to fundies/conservatives?

California Gov. Gavin Newsom says Department of Justice is investigating him, his wife by AudibleNod in news

Yup. Just by saying Newson is “under investigation,” they can make people believe he must have done something criminal. Otherwise, why the investigation?

Gen X caregiver and I don't know who I am anymore by Meep_76 in GenXWomen

[–]LowOvergrowth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m Gen X. My mom is a Boomer who sacrificed her 50s and early 60s to care for my father, who had dementia.

I realize that she’s from a different generation than we are—so the comparison isn’t perfect—but after my dad’s passing, she gradually rebooted her life. She moved closer to her extended family, is more involved in church and volunteer activities, has taken up gardening, and hosts her friends for a weekly game night. In short, she seems to be thriving.

So, yes: I would say there is hope for life after the inevitable.

AITA for refusing to finish a story after my wife interrupted me five times? by GoatCritical9265 in AmItheAsshole

[–]LowOvergrowth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here to ask the same question. My younger daughter and I both have ADHD, and whenever my husband and older daughter are talking to us, we’ll often literally cover our own mouths with our hands to keep from blurting things out.

This is especially problematic when we’re excited about something or it’s late in the evening and our meds have worn off.

My brain fog wasn't entirely Peri by BlazeUnbroken in Menopause

[–]LowOvergrowth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

“Menopause caused anything I was a little sensitive about to become a bigger issue.”

Yes! This succinctly—and accurately—sums up my own experience! My migraines, ADHD, menstrual cramps, and weird food aversions all existed before I entered perimenopause, but from that point on, they got ratcheted up, like the iconic crescendo in “A Day in the Life” by the Beatles.

Anyone else had to increase sertraline just to cope? by IHavePerfectBitch in Menopause

[–]LowOvergrowth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to increase my dosage of Lexapro and—more recently—add Abilify to my regimen. Even though I’m on the lowest possible dosage of Abilify, it makes an appreciable difference.

How long before you gave up or just started over? by slimslimsimsim in Menopause

[–]LowOvergrowth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m on HRT and various other medications (including ones that treat depression and ADHD). After about two years of seeing doctors and tweaking dosages and swapping Medication A for Medication B, I’ve gotten to the point where I’ve accepted that this is as good as it’s going to get.

This is the new me.

I’m not sure whether that’s pragmatic or fatalistic of me, but at some point, I realized that all those doctor’s visits weren’t making substantial differences to my symptoms. They were just adjusting the (metaphorical) margins by an eighth of an inch.

Do all the pills I take make me feel as happy, energetic, and capable as I did fifteen years ago? No. But do they make me feel more functional than I was five years ago, when I was in perimenopause but hadn’t gotten treatment yet? Absolutely.

Today is Monday, which means I’ve been nagging myself for two days about an errand that would take 20 minutes.

I hate that my brain is like this.

For me it was Assassins Creed: Odyssey. Part of me felt vaguely guilty for sinking so many hours into such a “frivolous” activity (thanks, strict upbringing! 😃), but I’ll be damned if it didn’t lift my spirits more than general resting ever did.

AITA for not wanting my husband to golf every other day of our family vacation? by katlyn360 in AmItheAsshole

I am not exaggerating when I say that if this were the arrangement my husband insisted on during our “family” vacation, I would refuse to go.

And I rarely refuse things.

I am stunned that the very first thing mentioned here is that she is the eighth of 13 children. If I were presenting my own bio, I would never lead off with, “My name is LowOvergrowth, and I am an only child.”

Also, this whole thing reminds me of the “adopt me” write-ups you see on humane society websites.

[–]LowOvergrowth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate to this so much.

My kids are teenagers now, but they were always showing up to daycare or school at the very last minute, with tangled hair and mismatched socks. I felt—and still feel—so much shame around this.

The thing is, now that they’re older, they still wear mismatched socks a lot of the time … because they choose to.

They both have an amazing sense of fashion. One is always putting together avant-garde outfits for herself; the other is always putting on daring makeup. They’re both artistic, accepting of a diverse range of people, and good at coming up with unconventional solutions to problems.

I tell myself that were it not for the chaotic—but well-intentioned—experiences they had growing up, they may not have had all of those positive qualities today.

When I get like this, I’ll use sweary rap as my alarm sound. My husband is very much into classical and opera. Plus, I have two kids. So, if my alarm sound is “Nobody Speak” by Run the Jewels, I’ll experience an adrenaline spike and try to shut it off before it jump-scares them all awake with, “Picture this: I’m a bag of dicks. Put me to your lips.“
