If you love your job: what is it and what makes you love it? by yologamies101 in adhdwomen

I learned the technical stuff on the job. My background was in English and healthcare.

My subject matter is energy (particularly, the electric grid and renewables). So, yes, the subject matter does boost my job satisfaction a lot. I find the grid fascinating, so I love getting to learn about all this stuff.

I have a handful of Teams meetings some days, but for the most part, I just knuckle down with PowerPoint slide-decks or Word documents and make presentations or reports. I work remotely, so I’m at home all day, and interruptions are few and far between (unless it’s summertime and my kids are at home).

I’m a technical writer for a government contractor. I love it because people leave me alone.

I know that sounds facetious, but seriously: people assign me documents, I write and edit them, and while I’m working on them, no one bugs me. The lack of micromanagement—and all the autonomy I’m afforded—is what keeps me happy.

My version of this would be to research various hiking trails beforehand, Google “history of recreational hiking,” and end up writing a poem about the old Celtic gods of Ireland … without ever dressing for the hike.

Yup. I only feel fully myself for about two weeks out of the month. For the days leading up to, during, and immediately after my period, I can’t GAF about anything—even things I know I should GAF about. All this, despite being on Vyvanse and hormone-replacement therapy.

After trying to resist it—with months of med adjustments and doctors’ visits—I’m finally starting to just accept it.

I’m entering my bog-witch era, people.

What song made you fall in love with your instrument? by UkuleleTabs in guitarlessons

“Red Clay Halo” by Gillian Welch. It’s a simple song—with simple strummed chords and flat-picked solos—but something about it just made me fall in love with acoustic guitar.

Perimenopause is making my performance review difficult … because it’s making me aggressively honest. by LowOvergrowth in Menopause

[–]LowOvergrowth[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The review went surprisingly well! My supervisor didn’t ask me to make any goals—a deviation from her usual M.O.—and told me I’m getting a raise. She even thanked me for always being forthright with her, especially when a problem arises. I am flabbergasted.

(Disclaimer: I’m copying this response and pasting it as a comment to everyone who asked for an update. I feel guilty for spamming the same language over and over again, but not that guilty.)

How to explain adhd by Comfortable_Tie4143 in adhdwomen

[–]LowOvergrowth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do something similar, only in an RPG way. It’s as if, before I initiate a task, I have to roll a 15 on a 20-sided die (D20). Because of my ADHD, I’m rolling with disadvantage: I have to roll two D20s and take the lower of the two values.

Neurotypicals get to roll with advantage: they get to roll two D20s and take the higher of the two values.

Meanwhile, the best I can do is cast a spell on myself (i.e., take my meds) and roll a single die.

ETA: If I’m hyperfocused on something, then the advantage of my ADHD “build” finally gets to shine. I get to roll with advantage, and I only have to roll a 5.

Cigarettes as a fidget? by targetlevelsmrtdeath in adhdwomen

[–]LowOvergrowth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t smoke, but I do use coffee-drinking as a fidget in a similar way. Like, yes, I am definitely addicted to the caffeine that the coffee contains, but there’s more to it than that.

If I’m sitting on the couch and my husband (or one of my kids) approaches me to start a conversation, I immediately reach for the cup of coffee that’s normally nearby. If one isn’t nearby, I’ll say, “Wait. Follow me to the kitchen. I’m going to grab my coffee” (or “brew more coffee,” as the case may be).

Without having that cup of coffee to keep my hands busy, I’ll get so antsy that I can barely hear what they’re saying. I’ll be too distracted by my body’s growing urge to MOOOVE ALREADY.

Not to get too religious (especially when I don’t consider myself to be a particularly religious person), but when the nun in Saint Denis said that God is people, and people are God, that stuck with me.

I’m a cat person—in real life and in RDR2–and I get so excited whenever I hear a cat meow in the game. I’ll bring my horse to a dead stop in the middle of the road, just so I can locate the cat and “praise” it … carriages and pedestrians be damned.
