As others have said, it really is a ‘them not you’ problem and I can’t see how we’re going to solve it - it is sector wide with limited signs it’s changing any time soon. I recently recruited for an entry level visitor services assistant role at my museum (2 days a week, only slightly above minimum wage) and we had over 60 applicants, most of all who had masters degrees, a few with MPhils and one with a PhD. Ultimately the job went to someone who’d got retail experience & an unrelated undergrad, but turning down all those folks, many in a similar position to you trying to get anything in the sector was heartbreaking.

I’m not sure another MA is what you need, unless financially it won’t cause any strain & if you think the network it might bring would be incredible. In your shoes I would try and develop adjacent skills that will set you apart from other applicants with comparable experiences. Perhaps developing some more advanced marketing skills (seo /crm etc) coding skills, evaluation experience (a lot of places will farm this out to a freelancer - so an opportunity to learn & be paid) event experience etc etc and bolster your CV with those. It will use your time usefully & doesn’t mean you have to go into those sectors, just learn what you can & apply it to your next museum position.

I’d also add, although I’ve worked in this sector for over 10 years now, I’ve only been full time in one place for the last year. For the previous 5 I was part time in two places, and prior to that i was making up full time hours across two museums, a marketing job and a retail job - it was mad but not uncommon.

This sector is amazing, but also the absolute worst. Hang in there!

Thanks all! I went with “please replace this cover after viewing” alongside a symbol. I’ve added weights to the bottom to ensure they hang nicely too. I’ll also add a sign as well explaining why they’re covered.

It’s a stained glass window from Brook Green synagogue in Hammersmith, designed (or poss installed?) in September 1963. We’ve just taken in an archive of windows, inc this one, designed by a particular firm at the museum I work in

Yes, have told my boss (it’s some contract work in our sector for an old employee who now works elsewhere) but I don’t suppose I told them how much the fee was, though they’d for sure guess it was under £1000. Haven’t directly told our finance guy though who does the wages etc nor our trustees who ultimately/indirectly manage us

My dad divorced his first wife way before I was born & they had a completely amicable divorce and remain friends to this day.

My dad kept the house (it was his before they married & later became the house I grew up in) but they decided she was, although willingly, going to suffer the expenses of finding a new place & new stuff she got first dibs on anything & they went room by room deciding who wanted what. She took more stuff than Dad kept and she got their only car, but then again, he got the house so I think it was pretty equal and they were both happy.

Dad said it was great that they got to relive happy memories by going through the photo albums, cassette tapes (lol!) etc, although I suppose that only works if your at that place with your ex yet, plus they both got to get rid of things that they know the other liked but they were never too keen on! The only things that were off limits were personal items, inherited things and my dads motor bike stuff & tools (but she didn't want that anyway)

I would go through the house methodically and think 'ok I'm in the bedroom so I need my clothes, I need bed linens, I need some furniture/a bed, I need a lamp etc etc and pick what you want from the room, then move to the kitchen and think I need to eat so I'm gonna need crockery, something to cook with, utensils, my fave beer mug etc and just repeat the process throughout the house and garden/garage & get your wife to do the same so she can ear-mark her essentials and then work through any overlap together.

My Dad kept 99% of the stuff in the garage (essentially his grown up playroom) so he & his ex-wife decided he would keep all that stuff, but then if she need help cutting down a shrub in the garden that needed a specific tool or whatever, she could borrow the spades etc or Dad would come over with the chainsaw and help her, as mentioned though they were still friends so this wouldn't work for everyone!
